We are seeking two exceptional Non-Executive Directors to join our Board of Directors.

These roles represent exciting opportunities for inspirational individuals to join our Board of Directors and to contribute to the achievement of our strategic ambitions, making a positive difference to the care we provide at an exciting time for the Trust.

We seek applicants who share and role model our values - caring, fair and innovative - as we build a culture where all of our people can thrive. We are looking for two individuals with financial or clinical qualifications and experience. We would welcome an individual who has experience of implementing a digital strategy in a large and complex organisation. The successful candidates will have recent, relevant, Board-level experience in a large and complex organisation, preferably gained as a member of a unitary board.

Main duties of the job

In order to complement the existing skill mix of our Board, we would particularly welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate recent, relevant experience in:

Finance Non Executive Director

  • Recent, relevant, senior level risk management experience gained in a large and complex organisation with the proven ability to chair the Audit Committee.
  • Have a qualification or qualifications in finance such as - Chartered Financial Analyst, Associated Chartered Accountant, Financial Risk Manager, Certified Financial Planner, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualifications, Certified Management Accountant.

Clinical Non Executive Director

  • Knowledge, insight and understanding of excellence in healthcare, developed from a medical, nursing, allied disciplines or social care role.
  • Recent, relevant experience (10 years) of implementing continuous improvement methodologies in a regulatory or clinical role.
  • The ability to support the executive team, especially clinical leaders within the Trust, and their leadership of the organisation, while monitoring their conduct and seeking to uphold the highest ethical standards of integrity and probity.
  • A commitment to patients and the promotion of excellent health care services.

Non-Executive Directors work alongside executive directors as unitary Board members. They share responsibility for the decisions made by the Board and for promoting the success of the organisation. Non-executive directors play a crucial role in bringing an independent perspective as well as specific knowledge and skills.

Non-executive directors are responsible for providing appropriate oversight, governance and leadership to Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust) in the pursuit of its strategy of delivering outstanding healthcare services.

Finance Non Executive Director

You will provide leadership to contribute to our strategic development, good governance and risk management, and you will possess the skills to bring challenge, support and robust scrutiny to the role.

The successful post holder will be supported to shadow the current Chair of the Audit Committee for a period of time and will take over as Chair in March 2023.

You must have the necessary skills to help embed the Audit Committees remit of providing assurance on the effectiveness of systems of integrated governance, risk management and internal control which are fundamental to the achievement of the Trusts objectives.

You must have relevant experience at Board level in a large and complex organisation and hold a recognised financial qualification.

Clinical Non Executive Director

You will have recent senior or board level experience in clinical and patient safety expertise gained from medical, nursing, allied disciplines or social care in a research, regulatory or clinically focused role together with experience of applying this to large-scale improvement.

You will need to have a genuine commitment to patients and the promotion of excellent health care services.

The Non-Executive Director Role:

  • Promote a positive culture throughout the Trust, maintaining high professional and ethical standards and behaving in accordance with the values of the Trust,
  • Bring appropriate challenge to the work of the Board,
  • Contribute to the development of strategy

Non-Executive Directors have a duty to:

  • Scrutinise the performance of the executive directors in meeting agreed goals,
  • Satisfy themselves as to the integrity of financial, clinical and other information,
  • Satisfy themselves that controls and systems of risk management and governance are fit for purpose and effective,
  • Assess the adequacy of information to enable the Board and its Committees to discharge their responsibilities.

Non-Executive Directors are responsible for:

  • Determining appropriate levels of remuneration of executive directors,
  • Appointing the Chief Executive (with the approval of the Council of Governors),
  • Appointing other executive directors along with the Chief Executive,
  • Succession planning for key executive roles.

Relations with the Council of Governors

Non-Executive Directors will:

  • Take into account the views of Governors and Trust members in setting the forward strategy for the organisation,
  • Be accountable to the Council of Governors for the progress made in delivering the Trusts strategic objectives and for their own role in achieving this.
