Job summary
This is a new exciting post for 24 months in the first instance, flexibly designed with 40% devoted to enhance an individual's research & training in endoscopy and 60% towards service commitments in busy state-of-the-art endoscopy unit which is co-located with the Mersey School of Endoscopy, a National Training Centre and the Directorate of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
The successful candidate will joining one of the most prestigious departments in the UK, containing the Liver National Clinical Director, Past Royal College of Physicians President, the current BSG president, the BSG president in waiting, an Past BSG president and the Past president of JAG. The team consists of 15 Consultant Gastroenterologists (including 4 Consultant Endoscopists), 3 Nurse Consultants and 8 Specialist Nurses, 1 Endoscopy Research Fellow, 5 SpRs, 2 Lecturers, 3 Research Fellows and 6 F1/2 doctors.
Please note whilst this is funded post we would also welcome application from candidates who are self funding. We would expect they could contribute to on call rota which will add to their experience.
Main duties of the job
Endoscopy Training & Research: This 40% of the post will be flexible and tailored to the successful applicants needs. We can offer training in a number of advanced endoscopic techniques including ERCP, EMR, HALO, EUS, advance colonoscopy and Capsule Endoscopy (for full range of procedures & services ). We also have a healthy endoscopy research and audit programme and we would hope that the successful applicant will take these opportunities to strengthen their CV with presentations in national and international meeting and publications. If desired we can help the successful applicant towards a higher degree or a Masters research degree. The applicant may also want to be involved in the national training programmes through the Mersey School of Endoscopy or any of our other specialist services including Hepatology, IBD & upper GI.
Service Commitment: The post will be used flexibly with a 60% commitment to service which includes independent diagnostic & basic therapeutic endoscopy and colonoscopy lists as well as clinics. It is therefore essential that the applicant meet the JAG criteria for independence in both Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy. The endoscopy unit runs a 3 session day (8.30-12.30, 13.00-16.30, 17.00-20.30) and it is expected that the service commitment may include 1 evening session per week.

We are one of the largest endoscopy units in UK performing over 22,000 procedures per annum and the only national endoscopy training centre outside London as the Mersey School of Endoscopy. During our recent re-accreditation by JAG we were highly praised The unit has a strong vision of future developments which will ensure it remains at the forefront of endoscopy training, service delivery and innovation in the UK. It is a Bowel Cancer Screening Centre and offers the full depth and breth of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. This includes HALO, ERCP, EUS, Capsule and Confocal Endoscopy
The endoscopy unit is unique with 4 Consultant Endoscopists namely Dr Sanchoy Sarkar, Professor Tony Morris, Dr Paul OToole and Dr Neil Haslam and an Endoscopy Research Fellow. Further advanced endoscopy is supported by Dr Howard Smart, Professor Martin Lombard, and Dr Jonathan Evans. The department is committed to teaching with an a weekly afternoon session dedicated to departmental teaching (APEX; Audit, Pathology, Education and Xray MDT) and a weekly early morning Endoscopy TREATS (Endoscopy Training, Research, Education, Audit, Teaching & Scene) meeting. We lead and contribute towards a wide research, teaching and audit programme which is innovative and at the forefront of Endoscopy with numerous multidisciplinary publications to which we hope the successful applicant will contribute to.
