Job summary
The Cellular Pathology service at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories consists of multiple departments, including Histopathology, Immunocytochemistry, Molecular Pathology, Cytopathology, Ophthalmic Pathology, mortuary and bereavement services, medical examiners service and forensic pathology.
The departments operating hours are 07:30 to 19:30 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 16:00 Weekends and Bank Holidays. The post holder will be required to carry out all duties relevant to a Medical Laboratory Assistant 2, including participation in all aspects of the Cellular Pathology specimen reception and archive teams. This post is essential for the day to day running of the service and will work closely with all other staff within the directorate to deliver the highest quality standard of patient care.
Main duties of the job
- Receipting and accessioning in a wide variety of Cellular Pathology specimens
- Accurate transcription of sensitive clinical patient information
- Receipt and distribution of specialist referral cases
- Distribution of clinical material to internal and external stakeholders
- Maintenance of the directorate archive
- Maintaining compliance with all Trust and directorate information governance and quality standards

- Accurately and swiftly enter patient demographics, tests requested and clinical details information on the computer system.
- Extract information from Telepath database for general telephone enquiries by staff from other departments, surgeries or hospitals.
- Have a basic knowledge of medical terms and acronyms in order to ensure that clinical details are correctly entered to computer system.
- Provide prompt and accurate distribution of outgoing laboratory reports to wards, departments, GP practices and other hospitals.
- Scanning of request forms into computer database for storage.
- Use of Telepath computer system to gather pre-defined lists and extract information.
- Receive and assess samples delivered into the relevant cellular pathology laboratory. Distribute specimens to relevant areas, prioritising urgent, clinic and labile samples.
- Receive and assess samples delivered into the Pathology Services reception area, and take receipt of samples from patients in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ensure sample identification matches request form identification, and take appropriate course of action when errors/omissions occur, according to standard operating procedures.
- Ensure appropriateness of samples for tests requested, and enter reasons for rejection on to Telepath computer system when errors have occurred.
- Apply laboratory accession number to both sample(s) and form.
- Prepare specimens appropriately where necessary.
- Identify and safely bag clinical waste ready for disposal, and transfer to disposal area.
- Dispatch of samples to external centres following regulations for postage of pathological specimens. Ensuring that samples are packaged appropriately.
- Unpack samples received via post or courier services and check integrity of samples. Verify appropriateness of the samples for the requests indicated
- Use own judgement and knowledge with reference to the appropriate standard operating procedure to reject unsuitable specimens and requests where necessary, and enter reasons for rejection onto Telepath computer system. To refer problematic specimens to a supervisor for further action if deemed necessary.
- Deal with requests for extra work by retrieving sample from archive, and entering details onto Telepath computer system.
- Deal with telephone enquiries to the department in a professional and courteous manner. When instructed telephone urgent results.
- Support other biomedical support workers and assist in training of new staff.
- Receive deliveries of goods and distribute to appropriate sections or store rooms, notifying supervisory staff where stocks are low.
- Assist biomedical scientists in archiving and storing completed specimens.
- Use Telepath and specimen tracking databases to locate archived specimens
- Maintain knowledge of operational policies and procedures through use of departmental electronic notice board and Qpulse.
