Job summary

To provide comprehensive assistance to Speech and Language therapists in the provision of an effective and efficient speech and language therapy service to children with communication difficulties.

Main duties of the job

Speech and Language Therapy

Band 4 - 26.25 hours

The post holder will be required to:

  • deliver speech & language therapy programmes under the guidance of a Speech & Language Therapist
  • liaise with parents and other professionals, including the demonstration of therapy programmes
  • liaise with the Speech & Language Therapist regarding progress
  • contribute to the delivery of training for other professionals, with speech & language therapy colleagues
  • support speech & language therapy colleagues in admin tasks and providing/maintaining resources
  • contribute to team audits

Ideally, the post holder will have the following experience:

  • experience delivering speech & language therapy programmes

Job description

Job responsibilities

Main responsibilities

  1. Assist with patient assessment, including informal assessment and observation, and components of formal standardised assessment procedures, as requested
  2. Undertake clinical work with individuals and groups of clients, including designing, implementing and adapting programmes of care/care packages using clinical judgement
  3. Establish and maintain liaison with parents/carers and other professionals, both within own department and with other services/departments for the comprehensive management

of clients. Includes attendance and participation at case conferences

  1. In some situations, may communicate factual and sensitive information to clients/parents where there will often be significant barriers to understanding. Communication will include both verbal and non-verbal methods
  2. Contribute to development of procedures, policies and standards for service delivery
  3. Maintain and provide accurate and timely documentation e.g. patient records, and complete standard format reports following discussion with therapist, sharing with others as appropriate, observing data protection guidelines
  4. To record contact electronically within 24 hours of contact
  5. Follow best practice SLT standards in accordance with national, regional and professional standards
  6. Supports implementation of therapy by preparation of therapy materials and administrative/resource based tasks associated with delivery of service
  7. Meet the required level of continuing professional development as required by the Trust.

Actively participate in receiving:

  • Individual personal development programme/appraisal
  • Peer review
  • Reflective practice
  • Clinical supervision

Independently identifies own development needs and discusses with Line Manager should formal training be required

  1. Provide prospective SLT undergraduates and other professionals the opportunity to observe the work of a SLT Assistant

  1. Assist in the induction of new staff supporting newly employed SLTAs
  2. To demonstrate skills to others regarding specific clients, and assist in delivering training, if appropriate
  3. Attend and provide input at SLT service meetings
  4. May attend multi-disciplinary meetings within Health economy and external multi agency meetings, at request of Supervising therapist
  5. Observes personal duty of care in relation to equipment and resources in course of work and highlights the need for ordering further equipment as required
  6. Ensure good time keeping and planning, to execute the role effectively
  7. To refer matters that may impact on service delivery to Line Manager or other authority before taking action
  8. To undertake any other duties of a similar nature consistent with the responsibilities of this post in order to provide a quality Speech and Language Therapy
