West Midland Foundation Psychiatry Development Fellow

West Midlands NHS England & the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust are excited to advertise the opportunity for doctors to be recruited for a Fixed Term of twelve months as a West Midlands Foundation Psychiatry Development Fellow from August 2023.

Doctors applying must have completed Foundation Year 2 or equivalent training.

The Line Managers will be West Midlands Foundation Psychiatry Training Programme Director Dr Jonathan Hurlow for NHS England duties and Walsall EIP Team Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Rajkumar Kamatchi for Clinical Duties.

The hours of work will include 2 fellowship days at NHS England per week and 3 clinical days at Walsall Early Intervention in Psychosis Team.

For doctors in ongoing training applicants must obtain pre-agreement from their Manager/TPD and employing trust that they will be allowed to take up the role before submitting an application.

Main duties of the job

You should discuss this with your Training Programme Director.

You may need to consider applying for Out of Programme experience or Less Than Full Time Training.

During the 3 clinical days, the fellow will be working with Walsall EI team, supporting the multidisciplinary assessment and treatment of patients referred with new onset psychotic symptoms. The fellow will also be supporting follow-up reviews of patients with confirmed first episode psychosis at the team base and occasionally at patient's home along with MDT members.

Work with the Foundation Psychiatry Training Programme Director to develop sustainable mechanisms of post expansion, monitoring, support and guidance for seven mental health training bodies across the West Midlands. This is particularly important for new posts and the 10% of placements which led doctors to feel less inclined to specialise in psychiatry.

Additionally, they will plan the delivery of educational material for Clinical & Educational Supervisors for at least 102 Foundation Doctors training in psychiatry.

Fellows have the opportunity to build mentoring, teaching, leadership and project management skills, whilst experiencing psychiatric specialty working to deliver sustainable improvement to the training experience.
