Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Mental Health Nurse with a real passion for perinatal mental health. Experience in this field is not essential as full induction is offered, but you will be keen to develop a career in this area. You should have attained a level of experience proportionate to the competencies detailed in the job description, possess the skills as detailed in the person specification and be able to work autonomously and with partner agencies. As a service we seek to understand presenting difficulties in the context of people's whole lives and work with that to promote understanding. You will be a compassionate practitioner who wants to make a difference to families.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for clinical triage of women who access the service during pregnancy and in the first year postnatal and decide on the most appropriate care required.
  • To be responsible for the assessment, planning implementation and evaluation of the evidence based care required, including health promotion for women and their infants.
  • Responsible for the appropriate clinical risk assessment of women, their infants and unborn children, providing an effective advice, guidance and decision-making process culminating in the coordination of any reviewed plan of care.

Job Title: Specialist Perinatal Community Mental Health Nurse

Grade: Band 6 Hours: 37.5hrs / week

Reporting to: Perinatal Community Team Manager Accountable to: Clinical Service Manager

Location: Bushey Fields Hospital to cover Dudley and Sandwell

Job Purpose

The Perinatal Mental Health Nurse will work as a member of the wider Perinatal Mental Health Service. The practitioner will manage a defined caseload of women with moderate to severe perinatal mental health problems, and those with pre-existing severe mental health disorders to promote well-being, mother-infant relationships and reduce risk, during a vulnerable time for womens mental health. They will undertake holistic community assessments, in a range of settings, with a strong emphasis on the parent-infant relationship and safeguarding. Acting as a key member of the multi-disciplinary team, the post holder will provide assessment, psychosocial, evidence based interventions using a collaborative, recovery approach and will be skilled at proactive and positive risk management. In addition the nurse will be expected to offer both support and advice to partners and relatives and to work in an integrated manner with key partner organisations and professionals. The post holder will be required to provide consultative advice to other agencies and to participate in delivering training and development for other professionals. The post holder will contribute to the clinical leadership of the team, providing supervision for other team members, as agreed with the Team Manager, and participate in team and service development and evaluation. Liaison with a wide range of agencies including midwifery, health visiting and primary care, is central to the role. The post holder will contribute to the transformation of the perinatal service to meet best practice standards including NICE guidelines for Antenatal and Postnatal Mental Health and the Royal College of Psychiatrist Quality Network Standards (CCQI).

The post holder must hold a full driving licence and have permanent access to own transport and have appropriate insurance.
