Job summary

Operationally manage a ward based in patient team in accordance with Trust

Values. Responsible for the delivery of effective, efficient and high quality services for people with Mental Health illness.

Work in conjunction with the Service Manager, Matron, Head of Nursing, General

Manager, Clinical Director and Professional Leads to develop and deliver safe and effective services, in accordance with key national targets, clinical standards, service priorities and performance indicators set by local commissioners and Trust policies.

Work in partnership with other professionals to provide multi-agency services that achieve the best possible outcomes for people admitted to the centre.

The post holder will support and oversee operational delivery of the team; they will be required to work autonomously in order to address issues impacting on clinical care, quality, service delivery, with overall support and strategic direction from the Operational Service Manager.

The ward manager will promote a culture of Recovery and least restrictive practice for patients admitted to the unit through role modelling and team development.

Main duties of the job

  • Manage the team in accordance with Trust values and Divisional / Directorate objectives.
  • Develop effective working relationships with professionals both internal and external to the service as relevant.
  • Develop local service objectives and plans in conjunction with the Operational Manager to deliver services in line with the Divisional / Directorate objectives.
  • Work with the Operational Manager on service development and redesign and effectively manage service change across the workforce.
  • Participate in overall business planning across the Group, supporting the development of financial and workforce plans to support achievement of the business plan.
  • Provide managerial and clinical advice or oversight to other disciplines and agencies in relation to the Ward team.
  • Ensure that national targets and key performance indicators are met in accordance with the service specification, taking appropriate action where indicators are not being met with support from the Operational Manager.

  • Ensure adverse events / serious incidents are appropriately investigated and appropriate service changes are facilitated to avoid further incidents.
  • Ensure systems are in place to respond promptly and appropriately, in an open manner, to complaint and queries concerning the service.
  • Ensure that all staff in the team are competent and in date with training requirements.
  • Manage a delegated budget for the team, maintaining financial balance and ensuring effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Manage the purchase of resources and equipment required for the delivery of services.
  • Establish structures and processes within the team to ensure effective management, roster management, training and supervision of staff across the service.
  • Undertake effective service lead workforce planning, including succession planning and training and development planning to ensure the workforce has the necessary skills and knowledge to meet changing service needs and group business plans.
  • Manage recruitment and selection of staff, taking into account workforce plans and new ways of working.
  • Ensure staff are appraised, in accordance with Trust policies, with individual objectives and personal development plans agreed in order to achieve service plans and Group objectives and professional growth/development
  • Analyse data and information relating to ward based performance to inform future service priorities.
  • Preparing reports and analysing data to evidence service performance and clinical outcomes, as requested by the Service Manager / Head of Service/ General Manager
  • Ensure systems for clinical supervision are implemented and regularly reviewed for all team members.
  • Monitor contractual data/bed occupancy/safe staffing levels on a monthly basis and work with the business/ information and teams to address any issues.
  • Create a team culture in which staff are valued and well-supported and able to deliver services with care and compassion.
  • Ensure active service user involvement in any design, development and delivery of services.
  • Monitor and manage attendance e.g. annual leave, training, study leave and sickness absence, taking appropriate management action as required.
  • Ensure conduct and performance is effectively managed in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Undertake disciplinary investigations and present cases at disciplinary hearings, as requested by the Head of Service.
  • Directly manage and supervise a range of multi-disciplinary staff within the teams.
