Job summary

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated individual to join our Emergency Department (ED) team. This is a new post, to commence from September 2023, within the Emergency Department of Birmingham Childrens Hospital. It is offered as a 12 month locum post to cover service gaps resulting from existing consultants taking on external roles. The post comprises 8.0 programmed activities with a commitment to 1:6 weekends on call for the Emergency Department.

Main duties of the job

Birmingham Childrens Hospital is a large, multidisciplinary, dedicated childrens hospital. The ED is one of the busiest paediatric EDs in the UK, with approximately 60,000 annual attendances across a broad case-mix, and it has the full support of all paediatric medical and surgical subspecialties. We are the Major Trauma Centre for children in the Birmingham area and West Midlands region.

You will be joining a friendly and dedicated team of 11 Consultants, 6 Specialty Doctors/Senior Clinical Fellows, 4 senior Specialist Trainees (from Emergency Medicine and Paediatrics), 9 ST2/3s, 2 GP VTS trainees and 2 Teaching Fellows. We are also proud of our ongoing development of Advanced Nursing Practice within the ED. As a university teaching hospital, we provide excellent opportunities for education, and there is an active research programme within our department.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC Specialist Register for either Paediatrics or Emergency Medicine, or be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview.

For further information or to arrange an informal visit, please contact Dr Bridget Wilson, Clinical Lead, (bridget.wilson2@nhs.net), Dr Stuart Hartshorn (stuart.hartshorn@nhs.net), or via the departmental secretaries on 0121 333 9515/9516/9217.
