Job summary
Applications are invited for an
out of programme training opportunity for ST2 and ST3 (the first 6
months) paediatric trainees considering a career in Acute Paediatrics /
HDU, Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine or Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
The
2-year rotation will include a year spent in adult anaesthesia and general
intensive care, followed by a second year spent in PICU (6 months) and
paediatric emergency medicine (6 months). The rotation is open to trainees from
any Deanery. It is envisaged that year 1 will be considered as OOPE and year 2
as OOPT (ST3/3.5) by Programme Directors and Deaneries, In the West Midlands
Deanery the second year is counted within programme.
On
completion of the 2 year programme it is envisaged that a trainee would re-join
their Deanery run-through programme at ST4/ (4.5) level (subject to having
successfully passed MRCPCH).
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate with being their rotation
in Adult ICM/Anaesthetic where they will work on the junior ICM/Anaesthetic
rotation (either starting in anaesthetic or ICM at the Queen Elizabeth
Hospital.
The trainee will be fully
supervised to gain their skills and knowledge and gain their Entrustable
Professional Activities (IAC), for the first 3 months of their training.
Trainees will be on the on call
rota once they have acquired these skills but will be closely supervised by
senior colleagues.
During the PICM rotation at
Birmingham Childrens Hospital, They will be expected to complete the primary
training period of the two years fellowship programme
During the emergency medicine
rotation the post holder is responsible for the
assessment and management of all patients who present as emergencies to the
department, except those who have been referred directly to the RMO or on-call
specialty teams. Close liaison with the medical and surgical specialists is an
important aspect of good clinical practice and the post holder is expected to
maintain the established working relationships.
The post holder will offer a follow-up
review or refer patients to other hospital specialists or back to the patients
General Practitioner as necessary. It is expected that family doctors and other
relevant medical personnel are kept fully informed of their patients
circumstances and progress.
