Job summary
This is a full-time fixed term position, for a Specialist Support Worker in the Renal Unit to cover maternity leave who will provide a hospital based, Social Work service to children with all forms of kidney disease and their parents attending Birmingham Children's hospital (BCH).
The Renal Unit multi-professional team consists of a medical team , a surgical team of urologists and consultants in transplantation, a team of specialist nurses proficient in peritoneal and haemodialysis, and members from dietetics, play therapy, teaching, nursing, psychology, pharmacy and other allied therapies.
The Renal Unit has an extended Multidisciplinary Team which works closely with the transplant team from the University Hospital Birmingham Trust (UHBT). The Team provides an integrated transplant service for cadaveric ad living related kidney transplants.
The Specialist Support Worker will be part of the core team and have an important role in supporting the wider multi-professional team by assisting, guiding, and directing patients and their families, thereby enabling them to manage the many practical issues, including meeting legislative requirements related to complex treatments, generated by their specific disorder.
Main duties of the job
To provide a specialist, social work service to children, young people and their families attending the Renal Unit for management of all aspects of kidney disease, with a particular focus on those with chronic kidney disease requiring dialysis and transplantation.
To promote the well-being of this group of patients and help to achieve the best possible outcome of care.
