Job summary
This is an NHS post comprising 10 PAs per week The post holder will join the multidisciplinary team delivering paediatric and adolescent rheumatology within Birmingham, the West Midlands and beyond.The post has become available due to the absence of a colleague, There are 8.25 Direct Clinical Care PAs (including a 1 in 4 on call commitment which attracts 0.25 PA per on call week), and 1.75 supporting professional activities. The post holder will be a dedicated paediatric and adolescent rheumatology specialist who will provide the clinical rheumatology service at BWCH and proactively support the education and clinical research programmes within the department.
The Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology Service at BWCH sees 500 new outpatients per year. This service also provides a number of specialist rheumatology clinics including SLE, scleroderma and juvenile dermatomyositis; combined clinics including endocrine, plastic surgery, Behcet's, autoinflammatory, genetics and ophthalmology clinics; and also, an out-reach clinic in Hereford.
Main duties of the job
The purpose of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical rheumatology service with other consultants and members of the multidisciplinary team. The appointee will be employed by BWCH, and as such will be accountable to that Trust for appraisal, job planning, annual leave and study leave. The appointee is expected to be trained in paediatric and adolescent rheumatology and be skilled in intra-articular injections.
Clinically, he or she will share in the provision of the outpatient and inpatient service for paediatric and adolescent rheumatology (including a category B 1 in 4 on call commitment at BCH) and provide inpatient advice for other specialties when requested. There may be some crossover work at University Hospital Coventry and Warwick as the team has an SLA in place with UHCW. At BWCH, out of hours care is provided by the Hospital at Night team and at UHCW by the General Paediatric Team.
The appointee will attend and contribute to the specialised clinics at BWCH, including lupus, juvenile dermatomyositis, and scleroderma.
Clinics undertaken at BWCH will predominantly be jointly undertaken with other consultants and with the MDT. They will be a mixture of general and adolescent clinics. At BCH there is a dedicated weekly adolescent clinic, which facilitates developmentally appropriate care and transfer to adult services.
The consultant staff currently provides a 1 in 4 consultant category B on-call service for Paediatric and adolescent Rheumatology
