Job summary
We invite applications for a replacement Consultant Neonatologist post at Birmingham Women's & Children's Hospitals. The successful applicant will be part of both our Birmingham Women's Hospital Neonatal Intensive care Unit team (BWH NICU) and the Neonatal Transport Service (NTS). This full time 10 PA post has a 7.5 DCC, 2.5 SPA split with the DCC work further split into 4.5 BWH NICU and 3 NTS.
BWH NICU Consultant Neonatology follow a 11-week cycle incorporating IC, HDU, Special Care, Surgical Cover, non-resident nights on-call, clinics and non-clinical time. This post will share a line on the rota with an existing consultant who will also contribute to the NTS service. NTS clinical commitments include daytime and on-calls (non-resident).
Main duties of the job
The neonatal unit is the regional surgical NICU in the West Midlands. It has 41 cots, including 21 intensive care and high dependency, and 20 special care cots. ITU and HDU Activity levels are high and this is one of the busiest units in the country with a complex and varied case mix. There is a separate Transitional Care ward for 12 mothers and 16 babies.
There are approximately 8200 deliveries per year including fetal medicine referrals. There are approximately 2000 admissions into neonatal care per year.
Kids Intensive Care and Decision Support (KIDS) is the regional transport and advice service for critically ill children in the West Midlands and provides a single standalone transport service for neonates and children. This service delivers high quality care for critically ill neonates and children within , is funded by NHS England and is hosted by Birmingham Women's & Children's Hospital. KIDSNTS sit within the directorate of Urgent and Critical Care at Birmingham Women's & Children's Hospital.
NTS undertakes approximately 1200 transfers/ year, moving neonates between the 4 NICUs, 5 LNUs and 2 SCUs and 2 regional specialist hospitals (Birmingham Childrens and AlderHey). The successful appointee has responsibility forneonataltransfers between neonatal units and specialist hospitals. There is a 24/7 available ITU team (1 day; 1 night) and a single person team each day. There are dedicated ambulances and neonatal equipment on site.
