Job summary

The Specialty Doctor will have a central role within an MDT context in delivering psychiatric assessment and treatment for a caseload of complex patients and their families, as well as contribute to providing psychiatric & medical risk management. The postholder will support the hub core team medical lead and other MDT professional leads in participating with quality improvement & clinical governance activities.

On a day-to-day basis the Specialty Doctor will be part of the FTB integrated core community Mental Health Services comprising of specialist and dedicated mental health professionals including SAS Doctor Psychiatrist, senior mental health practitioners, Clinical Psychologist, Occupational therapist and Psychotherapists. The postholder will work under the supervision of a Consultant Psychiatrist.

They will have a close working relationship on clinical matters with multidisciplinary teams and provide important liaison with other doctors in primary and secondary care.

Main duties of the job

  • Providing direct psychiatric services through the clinical assessment, diagnosis and care plan, risk assessment and management plans, treatment formulation, prescribing and work with the team on implementing evidence-based interventions.
  • The post holder will be required to hold a caseload of patients (0-18 year olds) and review patients at a frequency according to their clinical need and risks.
  • To work alongside Consultant and the multi-disciplinary team in the provision of services for this area and, in particular, to provide assessment and evaluation of cases where a psychiatric disorder is suspected.
  • The post holder will participate in formulating and implementing appropriate care plan around physical healthcare needs of service users in the service.
  • To consult with senior medical colleagues where further help with complex assessments is needed.
  • To take clinical responsibility for any patient seen by him/ her, and for the advice he/she gives to members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Job responsibilities

  • To provide mental health assessments on both new referrals and open cases, and continuing treatment in drug or psychological therapies.
  • To write letters and communications to GPs and other professionals as required.
  • To participate in various medical staff meetings within Forward Thinking Birmingham and BWC Mental Health Services as required.
  • To perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances in consultation with senior and junior colleagues.
  • To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, have flexibility to respond to changing service requirements.
  • To participate in regular Audit and Quality Assurance programs to improve and maintain the high standard of service.
