Job summary
This post will provide training in the generality of Elective Paediatric Orthopaedics and Paediatric Orthopaedic Trauma. While the bulk of the training will be in Paediatric Orthopaedics (Elective and Trauma), exposure to Paediatric Spinal Deformity and Paediatric Orthopaedic Oncology, will also be achieved.
It is envisaged that the postholder will join in August 2024, remaining with the department for 4 months with possible extension.
The post is suitable for those wishing to pursue a career in Orthopaedics. The post will also suit those wishing to pursue a career Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine and General Practice, or many of the surgical specialties.
The successful candidate will spend their time at the Birmingham Childrens Hospital site. The post holder will participate in the surgical specialties out-of-hours on call.
Main duties of the job
It is expected that the post holder will take part in the academic activities of the unit. There will be opportunities for clinical research and audit under the supervision of the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and ample time for such projects. The post holder will also have the opportunity to be involved in teaching undergraduates during their Orthopaedic modules.
The Paediatric Orthopaedic Department at BCH holds a monthly Audit/MDT meeting which the post holder will be expected to attend throughout their
time with us. The department also holds further Audit meetings to coincide with the Trust Audit mornings. It is expected that the postholder will be involved with, and present the results of, at least one audit project while working in the department.

The Birmingham Childrens Hospital (BCH) site of BWC NHS Foundation Trust is a large, multidisciplinary, dedicated childrens hospital. It is the designated Paediatric Major Trauma Centre for the West Midlands.
BCH runs a daily weekday morning fracture clinic and trauma list (the latter shared between Ortho and Max-Fax). BCH is a tertiary referral centre for most paediatric specialties including orthopaedics. It also provides supra-regional services in many areas including the management of osteogenesis imperfect, paediatric spinal deformity, and paediatric orthopaedic oncology.
While at BCH the successful candidate will be exposed to the full spectrum of paediatric orthopaedic trauma with the exception of spinal trauma and the surgical management of pelvic trauma. For the latter we enjoy close working relationships with our pelvic surgery colleagues in the surrounding adult MTCs. Spinal trauma at BCH is managed by our neurosurgical colleagues.
BWC is a teaching Trust. As a result you may come into contact with students of many disciplines. Staff must comply with Trust policy and respective regulatory body requirements in relation to training and updating and fulfill duties of mentorship and assessment as required
