Job summary
The Specialist Midwife for Perinatal Mental Health (SPMW PMH) is part of the Birmingham Women's and Children's Foundation Trust's Integrated Safeguarding Team.
S/he will be based primarily at Birmingham Women's Hospital as part of a team of specialist midwives coordinating care for vulnerable women and their families.
The SPMW PMH will work with the perinatal mental health team & obstetric team. S/he will work with statutory/voluntary agencies and provide advice & support to staff, women and their families and recognise the importance of safeguarding both adults and children.
The SPMW PMH is expected to exercise a high degree of autonomy, providing advice, support, supervision and training to staff in relation to perinatal mental health issues, enhancing maternity care.
This is a key role in developing/maintaining high standards of care for women with mental health problems in pregnancy and the postnatal period. You will have a high level of relevant knowledge/skills to manage, develop and lead care for pregnant/new mothers with mental health needs. You will be responsible for identifying gaps in service provision and developing strategies to address them.
The SPMW PMH will be responsible for providing extra support and co-ordinating care plans for high risk pregnant women with more severe mental health problems, alongside their named community midwife and the specialist perinatal mental health team. based on their individual needs.
Main duties of the job
- To be the midwifery lead for perinatal mental health.
- To develop and regularly review and update training packages in relation to perinatal mental health.
- To develop and implement Trust policies, evidence-based guidelines and care pathways relevant to area of specialist knowledge and expertise.
- To work with maternity services as part of the corporate integrated Safeguarding Team and give regular feedback on service provided.
- To identify and promote ways of improving the service, utilising available research and ensuring alignment with Trust and group objectives.
- To provide expert clinical care to women, and advice and guidance to staff, in relation to perinatal mental health.
- To provide leadership and expert advice across the service relating to perinatal mental health.
- To systematically analyse and evaluate the service yearly against key performance targets, taking a lead role in the implementation of subsequent actions.
- To identify appropriate data for collection in line with national or local guidelines. Monitor the quality and quantity of data being collected and take the necessary action to deal with any problems to maintain data quality.
- To work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies in supporting families affected by perinatal mental health issues.
- To function autonomously within area of specialism and work in collaboration with the wider multi-disciplinary team, seizing opportunities to educate, support and shape policy across the service.
