Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory (WMRGL) in Birmingham, to join our dynamic team of scientists.Following the 2018 NHS England designation of seven national Genomic Laboratory Hubs (GLHs), the West Midland Regional Genetics Laboratory (WMRGL) is the designated Central & South GLH leading the Genomic Local Laboratory Network (GLLN) for the Wessex, Oxford and West Midlands Genomics Consortium as part of a national world class Genomics Laboratory Network.

The GLHs are an integral part of the national Genomic Medicine Service providing state of the art, high quality genomic analysis to patients with rare disease and/or cancer. The pace of change is exponential with genomics being placed at the heart of the future NHS. Our workforce is fundamental to the successful delivery of this ambitious and high profile service.

The WMRGL is based at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS FT sitting within the Division of Medicine & Genetics. We work closely with our Central & South Clinical Genetics Services and the Genomic Medicine Service Alliance; with the National School of Healthcare Science; with academia and the Life Science diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries.

We are committed to training and developing our staff at all levels and have active seminar and research programmes supporting Continuing Professional Development.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have a degree in Computer Science or a Health Informatics discipline, be a Bioinformatician who is HCPC registered or equivalent experience and qualifications. Experience in next generation sequencing, quality management, web development and database management is essential.

You will provide bioinformatics support to scientists engaged in the provision of genetic services as well as in research projects, working closely with staff across the department. You will be responsible for the testing, validation and implementation of analytical pipelines required to analyse genomic data (including next generation sequencing, microarray, and other emerging technologies) for a broad range of clinical diagnostic and research applications, including whole exome and whole genome analysis. A key priority will be supporting our growing cancer genomics services program, developing, validating and deploying as part of the national guidance on cancer testing. Expertise is also required for rapid exome analysis, including pipeline development and scalable, distributed analysis solutions.

You will work closely with the departmental Lead Bioinformaticians to implement cutting edge bioinformatic approaches to routine diagnostic pipelines. You are encouraged to stay current in scientific literature and advise on strategy relevant to bioinformatics as well as networking with other bioinformatic groups within the GLH, NHS, academia and industry.

Essential

  • Knowledge of Linux and commonly used command line tools
