Principal Research Bioinformatician (Genomics)

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory (WMRGL) in Birmingham for a Principal Research Bioinformatician to join our dynamic team of scientists & technologists. Applications are invited from skilled, innovative and motivated Bioinformaticians with an interest in human genetics.

This post will provide bioinformatic leadership in the delivery of research projects within the WMRGL and those developed and undertaken in collaboration with the Central & South (CAS) Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (GMSA).

The WMRGL is the designated Genomic Laboratory Hub leading the CAS GLH Consortium providing state of the art genomic analysis to patients with rare disease/cancer. Research and development is fundamental to the successful delivery of this high profile service.

The WMRGL is based at Birmingham Womens and Childrens NHS FT, working closely with Clinical Genetics, mainstream Clinicians, academia and pharmaceutical industries.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have a first degree in Computer Science/Health Informatics/Mathematics or related discipline, have completed a higher degree with significant bioinformatic content and experience of the application of bioinformatics in a research setting. Knowledge of next generation sequencing, quality management, web development and database management is essential. Flexible/remote working will be considered.

You will provide bioinformatics support for the delivery of research projects within the GLH and GMSA, be responsible for the testing, validation and implementation of analytical pipelines to analyse genomic data (including NGS & other emerging genomic technologies).

Working closely with the departmental Lead Bioinformaticians as well as the GLH Scientific Director and Cancer and Rare Disease Scientific leads, and the GMSA Research Directors, you will be required to provide advice on bioinformatics strategy as well as networking with other bioinformatics groups within the GMSA, NHS, academia and industry.

Essential

  • Degree in Computer Science or a Health Informatics discipline (first or second class with Honours) in OR relevant Biological Science with demonstrable abilities in informatics or computing
  • MSc in informatics/bioinformatics or equivalent
  • Active participation in CPD
  • Participation in departmental seminars/journal clubs
  • Involvement in new developments for the department

Desirable

  • Completed Training for Trainers

Experience

  • Previous experience of bioinformatics and familiarity with NGS data pipelines including the use of automated pipeline tools such as the Ruffus framework. Proficiency in Python or Perl programming
  • Administration and installation of Galaxy bioinformatic analysis environment
  • Knowledge of virtual machines, including administration, snapshotting and deployment within a corporate IT environment
  • Knowledge of Unix/Linux environment, experience with XML and JSON
  • Experience of software/algorithm development, testing, introduction, maintenance and support
  • Ability to evaluate new technologies and informatics tools relevant to a modern genetics laboratory
  • Knowledge of database design, development and administration including evaluating and understanding database schemas (data models)
  • Experience of project management
