Job summary

Birmingham Childrens Hospital is part of Birmingham Womens and Childrens NHS Foundation Trust and is the UKs leading specialist Paediatric centre, caring for sick children and young people between 0 and 16 years of age. The specialist centre has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission and is the first childrens hospital of its type in the country to receive such an accolade. We are one of the largest Principal Treatment Centres for Paediatric Cancer in the country and provide care for children with cancer across a huge geographical area spanning the Midlands and further afield. We are also one of two national centres for treating Retinoblastoma and we also have one of the largest Paediatric Stem Cell Transplant Units in the country. The Haematology and Oncology Service is housed within our bespoke state of the art building, Waterfall House and our services are delivered over two floors and includes an outpatients department and inpatient wards.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Exercise and Physical Activity Therapist to join our team. This is a new and innovative post supported by Birmingham Childrens Hospital Charity and has funding for 23 months, with the aim to make it a substantive post. The successful candidate will take the lead in setting up, establishing and maintaining a new service that seeks to improve the physical activity, exercise tolerance and engagement of children & young people with a haematological or oncological diagnosis. The post holder will make meaningful relationships with children and families who require compassion and expert advice throughout their journey, ensuring we show our Trust values to every patient - Ambitious, Brave, Compassionate. Essential

  • BSc in relevant Physiology/Exercise and Sports Science or Physical Education or equivalent
  • Level 2 on the Register of Exercise Professionals
  • Evidence of relevant post graduate courses or willingness to undertake

Desirable

  • Level 3/4 on the Register of Exercise Professionals
  • Behavioural change training/motivational interviewing
  • Completion of Level 4 CanRehab course
  • GP Exercise referral qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of helping people to improve their health and wellbeing
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of working with children of differing ages
  • Experience in consultation, goal setting and negotiation

Desirable

  • NHS clinical experience
  • Experience of delivery and supervision of exercise sessions for those with long term conditions
