Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory (WMRGL) in Birmingham for two Bioinformaticians to join our dynamic team of scientists & technologists. Applications are invited from skilled and motivated Bioinformaticians with an interest in human genetics. Flexible/remote working will be considered.

Genomic testing has significantly expanded in recent years with the introduction of large gene panels and exomes increasing the complexity of analysis and reporting. These posts will support the delivery of two clinical programmes and play a key role in future developments as part of the National Genomics Medicine Service in England.

The WMRGL is the designated Genomic Laboratory Hub leading the Central & South GLH Consortium providing state of the art genomic analysis to patients with rare disease/cancer. Our workforce is fundamental to the successful delivery of this high profile service.

The WMRGL is based at Birmingham Womens and Childrens NHS FT, working closely with Clinical Genetics, the Genomic Medicine Service Alliance, the National School of Healthcare Science, academia and pharmaceutical industries. We are committed to training and developing our staff at all levels supporting Continuing Professional Development.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have a degree in Computer Science/Health Informatics discipline, be either HCPC registered or have equivalent experience & qualifications. Experience in next generation sequencing, quality management, web development and database management is essential.

You will provide bioinformatics support for genetics services and research projects, be responsible for the testing, validation and implementation of analytical pipelines to analyse genomic data (including NGS, microarray & other emerging genomic technologies). A priority will be to support our growing cancer genomics services as part of the national guidance on cancer testing. Expertise is also required for rapid exome analysis and distributed analysis solutions. You will play a significant role in the development of bioinformatics validation tools to assist the interpretation of genetic variants.

Working closely with the departmental Lead Bioinformaticians you will be encouraged to provide advice on bioinformatics strategy as well as networking with other bioinformatics groups within the NHS, academia and industry.
