Job summary

We are pleased to invite internal expressions of interest for the fixed term position of Band 8a Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist in Neuro-Oncology. This is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated experienced oncology nurse to take on a leadership role within our specialist neuro-oncology services.

As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading and developing our neuro-oncology nursing services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care to those with diagnosed brain tumours.

In this role, you will be expected to provide professional and clinical leadership across our neuro-oncology services. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing expert leadership and support for neuro-oncology patients, ensuring continuity of care from diagnosis through all stages of their journey.
  • Acting as a key resource for staff, fostering professional development through mentoring, education, and reflective practice.
  • Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to develop, revise, and implement clinical guidelines, policies, and patient information.
  • Leading and managing the neuro-oncology nursing team across multiple sites to ensure the seamless delivery of services.
  • Providing direct care and supporting patients and families through treatment, providing guidance on side effects, self-care, and psychosocial support.

Main duties of the job

To provide professional and clinical leadership and expertise in the care of the patients with a suspected or diagnosed Neuro-Oncological condition.

Act as a resource for information and support, demonstrating progressive professional development in all areas of Neuro-Oncology nursing to the benefit of patients their carer's andstaff.

Continue to develop and enhance specialist skills through continued formal and informal education, mentoring, reflective practice and clinical supervision.

Work with the multi-disciplinary team to develop relevant policies and patient information.

Liaise effectively with all members of the Multi-disciplinary health care team to achieve a synchronised specialist service.

Deliver teaching on speciality courses, an on the BSc, MSc and other courses at the school, as well as informal ward or individual teaching.

The ideal candidate will have a genuine passion for neuro-oncology and a strong commitment to cancer care. In this role, you will be working with a diverse group of adult patients diagnosed with both high- and low-grade brain tumours, requiring you to assess their complex and holistic care needs, predominantly in an outpatient setting. You must possess excellent communication skills as well as organizational skills and be a self-motivated practitioner capable of inspiring confidence in both patients and colleagues. Additionally, you will be an advocate for patients and their families. The role requires the ability to work independently, as well as collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, including consultants and members of the broader neuro-oncology team.

In collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, formulate and/or revise relevant policies/guidelines and regularly review them following change/implementation whilstalways working within the policies and procedures of the Trust.

In collaboration with other members of the Neuro-oncology multidisciplinary team utilise and develop assessment tools that will ensure an appropriate level of nursing intervention so thatpatients with complex needs are referred to the appropriate specialists & agencies

To maintain nurse-led 'telephone clinics' whereby patients are provided with information and support and the problems and needs of patients and their carers are assessed and appropriatelychanneled and referred to other services as required.

Develop and utilise requisite advanced practice skills to develop and maintain nurse led follow-up services, whereby patients are referred on to medical colleagues following appropriate assessmentto maximize the efficient delivery of service

To initiate, run and evaluate appropriate group support in conjunction with other relevant professional disciplines.
