Job summary

This is a pivotal role. You will manage a world class team of researchers delivering a prestigious, multi-million-pound programme funded by the NIHR and the International Centre for Recurrent Head and Neck Cancer (EVEREST, NIHR 202862)). This involves a national collaboration led by The Marsden with ambitious aims of revolutionising the pathway for suspected head and neck cancers. In addition, you will also support clinical academics across the BRC in their preparations of high-quality research funding applications.

Main duties of the job

The primary function of this role is to take responsibility for the smooth day to day management of an NIHR programme of research. Programmes of work contain multiple projects or packages of work that each could be delivered on a stand-alone basis, but here are being delivered in a co-ordinated way to enable delivery of the best possible added value for UK health and social care.

The post-holder will provide operational leadership that will ensure the timely progression, co-ordination and control of the programme with pre-defined objectives, work plans and resources. They will lead programme organisation across multiple organisations, ensuring projects remain aligned to the programme vision; enable and monitor meaningful stakeholder engagement that contributes to the realisation of programme outputs/products; ensure resources are deployed for timely delivery of activities; oversee processes, systems and management structure that promotes work of the highest quality, and managing and mitigating risks to programme delivery.

The secondary function will be to part of a team that provides a corporate service across The Marsden and The ICR on an ad hoc basis to lead the project management of research funding applications to external funding bodies (e.g., MRC and NIHR).

Leadership, Strategy and Programme management

  • Provide high-level leadership, proactively organising programme management and governance to ensure appropriate oversight, attribution of responsibilities and effective communication with programme contributors.
  • Build, engage and energise the multi-organisational team, setting high performance expectations, including standards for the maintenance of accurate records of programme progress against work plans.
  • Oversee the reporting structure through which project leads are held accountable at programme level, ensuring the programme has policy/strategies in place for patient and public involvement and engagement, broader stakeholder engagement, dissemination, equality, diversity and inclusion, intellectual property protection and exploitation.
  • Work closely with the Marsden Head of Trial management, trial managers for individual projects and respective clinical trials units to ensure efficient delivery of all clinical trials within the programme portfolio.     Communication/stakeholder management

  • Lead on the development of effective communication strategies for external stakeholders.
  • Develop and oversee robust communication between the collaborators and the Marsden. This will include monitoring outputs from collaborating organisations to ensure appropriate accrediting and acknowledgment of the research funders, The Marsden and its investigators.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external and internal groups to ensure that research activity is promoted with relevant stakeholders.
  • Liaise with NIHR secretariat on an as needs basis to ensure compliance with NIHR policy and contractual obligations. This may include negotiating revisions to planned work and resources.

Supporting research funding applications

  • On an ad hoc basis, project manage pre-award research funding applications. The postholder will:
    • Help investigators identify the right funder/scheme for their proposed project.
    • Lead the coordination of input from co-investigators, The Marsden/ICR departments, including finance, technology transfer, research operations, legal, patient and public involvement and from external collaborating organisations, including finance and contracts input.
    • Work with investigators to complete relevant templates, providing guidance on requirements for funding applications.
    • Collate relevant text, schematics and other documents and upload to funder specifications.
    • Provide general advice to enhance competitiveness of applications under the principles of adding value in research.
    • Support communication with funders, in particular response to feedback, revision of plans and contracting.
