Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented individual to join our friendly and supportive L&D team at the Royal Marsden Hospital to lead and manage our apprenticeships and professional education offer to support our strategic ambition for education and meet the aims of our workforce development plan.

The successful post holder will also be responsible for leading on the Trust's apprenticeship provision to gain best value from the apprenticeship levy, putting together a broad range of opportunities on offer and ensuring these are well-promoted. To be successful in this role you will need to form close working partnerships with professional and operational leads to understand workforce development priorities and work together to implement workforce planning solutions supported by apprenticeship pathways. In this role you will be supported by a dedicated Business Manager and will also have additional administrative support from the wider L&D team.

We are keen to hear from experienced applicants but also for someone to learn and grow into this role. It would be great if you have strong experience in the provision of apprenticeships and also in education commissioning and managing CPD budgets but if your knowledge is only in one of these areas we are still keen to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for all Health Education England non-medical CPD funding streams, ensuring that the financial allocation for professional education is used effectively to meet the learning needs of the organisation to ensure the continued ability to deliver safe, effective patient centred care and treatment.

This will involve working closely with nursing, AHP and other professional leads to identify learning needs so that commissioning with The Royal Marsden School, higher education institutions and other education providers is co-ordinated and streamlined for the whole organisation. The post holder will lead on the monitoring of commissioned professional education and training ensuring cost-effectiveness, equality of access and quality outcomes, in line with the organisation's strategic direction.

The post holder will also lead on the delivery of the Apprenticeships programme to upskill new and existing staff, build career pathways, create entry routes into healthcare and help to address skills shortages across the workforce.

  • Identify the learning needs of clinical staff across the Trust and respond to these, using the information from the annual Learning Needs Analysis for commissioning education, development planning and resource allocation.
  • Develop an annual plan for the commissioning of professional education against the various income streams in accordance with organisational priorities for quality, safety and workforce development
  • Ensure plans for spending against external funding streams are drawn up on an annual basis and reported against at mid-year and year-end within the requisite timeframes
  • Hold responsibility for the commissioning of CPD courses and modules from RM School and other higher education providers following the identification of needs in collaboration with the leads of the non-medical specialties across the organisation, ensuring best value is obtained at all times.
  • Hold responsibility for the entire CPD budget on behalf of the Assistant Director of Workforce Development maintaining excellent systems of financial monitoring and reporting
