University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279)

Consultant in Acute Medicine

The closing date is 17 November 2025

Job summary

This is an innovative post for an individual looking to develop their role in a dynamic and well-equipped Acute Medicine Unit. The service is delivered on the Emergency Floor, and we are at an exciting point in time with a brand new stand alone Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit set to open in July 2025 at St Richard's Hospital.

We recently recruited two new Acute Medical Consultants and are keen to expand our team further to help us in future service development including medical high care. We therefore have a number of areas ripe for service development, and we encourage applicants to discuss the model with our current team.

We aim to provide first class care for our patients from arrival, ensuring rapid access to the right service at the right time. Our high 'Friends and Family' recommendation reflects our commitment to patient care using the 'Patient First' approach, with excellent opportunities for service-redesign.

This post includes a £20,000 retention bonus for the successful applicant, payable in line with our Retention Bonus Scheme policy. Please note that the retention bonus does not apply to candidates currently engaged by the Trust at the same grade as the advertised post, or to those who have been engaged at the same grade within the Trust in the past 24 months. For more information on Retention Bonus Scheme, please contact:uhsussex.consultant.sasdoctors@nhs.net

This is Acute Medicine the way you always imagined it would be - interesting, dynamic, exciting and requiring flexibility and adaptability. The nature of the Emergency Floor concept means that there is less demarcation between types of DCC activity then in more traditional posts, and this is reflected in the Job Plan, and the ways of working within the team, allowing for attendance at MDT meetings, x-ray discussions, and case presentations. The Emergency Floor rota is designed to provide a good balance between non-clinical and clinical time ensuring continuity and logical allocation of roles during the day.

On Call Commitment:At present, fully integrated within the medical on call rota working 1 in 7 weekends with 1 in 14 on call. However there isa plan to move to an annualised rota system in the near future, which will allow the consultant team to work a more flexible pattern and balance work / life.
