Job summary

The Safeguarding Children Specialist Nurse will support the Named Nurse in ensuring University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex) effectively safeguard children and young people in accordance with statutory guidance.

The post holder will be a source of advice and expertise on all safeguarding children matters and will promote good practice and effective communication within the organisation and partner agencies.

The specialist nurse will demonstrate a systematic approach to the work of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people accessing services delivered by UHSussex and will lead and manage a small safeguarding team.

Working with the Safeguarding Team, the Specialist Nurse will ensure that arrangements are in place for delivering safeguarding children supervision and training of all staff involved in providing services for children and families and adults at risk who are parents or carers and/or who may pose a risk to children.

The post holder will assist the Named Nurse in developing, monitoring, and reviewing health services requirements and standards for safeguarding and child protection practice.

Main duties of the job

  • Actively support the implementation and delivery of the Trust Safeguarding Children and Looked after Children Policy.

  • Work collaboratively as part of a wider Safeguarding Children Team at UHSussex to ensure that arrangements are in place for Safeguarding Children training and supervision.

  • Be a source of advice and expertise on all safeguarding children matters for staff at the point of need.

  • Promote good practice and effective communication within and between NHS Trusts and Partner agencies on all matters relating to safeguarding children.

  • Assist in audit to monitor the application of agreed standards for safeguarding children and young people.

  • Remain up to date and compliant with all organisational procedures policies and professional codes of conduct and uphold standards of best practice.

  • Ensure effective delivery of safeguarding children arrangements.

  • Lead and manage a small Safeguarding Team.

  • Deputise for the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children
