The Emergency Departments (ED) at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust are delighted to offer the opportunity for experienced Emergency Nurse/Care Practitioners to join our team on a bank basis. As demand grows in unscheduled/emergency care, we are looking to expand our team with keen, motivated and expert individuals to manage our cohort of minor injury and illness patients.
The trust has two EDs, the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton, and The Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Haywards Heath. The RSCH site is a large department and is a major trauma centre, it has a dedicated Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) with a team of ENPs/ECPs, ED doctors and GPs working collaboratively to deliver quality, patient focused health care to adult patients. The ED at the PRH site is a smaller unit with the UTC currently working within the main ED that sees and treats both adults and children.
The ENP/ECP is an experienced nurse or paramedic who has qualifications in minor injuries and illnesses and who can deliver unscheduled care to patients autonomously within defined guidelines in the UTC/ED. The ENP/ECP would be expected to individually maintain their competence and continue to develop their practice in line with their professional code of conduct.
The team is supported by a Lead ENP, Divisional Lead Nurse, Matron and a team of ED Consultants and General Practitioners, including an educational GP primarily focussed on developing the ENP/ECP team.
Main duties of the job
We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses.
To work as an autonomous practitioner within the Urgent treatment Centre (UTC) which is co-located within the main Emergency Department of the Royal Sussex County Hospital (Brighton) and within the Emergency department of the Princess Royal Hospital (Haywards Heath). Working to national and local guidelines, the ENP/ECP will assess, diagnose, treat and discharge both paediatric and adult patients presenting with a variety of minor injuries and illness, as well as more complex and chronic conditions within their scope of practice, referring for senior or specialist opinion where necessary.
To provide strong, visible clinical leadership within the UTC/ED, promoting good working practices within the nursing and multi-disciplinary team and contribute to meeting the identified Key Performance Indicators within the time frames identified.

Carry out initial patient contact assessments so that patients attending the UTC may be redirected, treated or referred on as appropriate.
To independently undertake highly specialised clinical assessments, diagnose, treat and discharge patients with a wide range of minor illnesses and injuries, including management of complex cases.
Work autonomously to manage their own caseload of patients whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Provide the latest evidenced based practice.

To adapt styles of communication appropriately in order to promote empowerment, self-management and health education for all patients.
To maintain, update and develop clinical competence and skills and assist in teaching within the Emergency Practitioner/ UTC team.
To act as mentor/ assessor for trainee ENP/ECP and nursing/ medical students as required.
To deliver teaching sessions as required to undergraduate and post-graduate staff within the multi-disciplinary team and to support the Lead ENP in teaching of trainee ENP and sign off competencies.
To identify own training and development needs and undertake appropriate training/ education as required. To ensure that any learning needs are identified as soon as possible.
To demonstrate skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work.
To participate in an annual performance review process, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.
Undertake clinical audit to measure the effectiveness of the service and ways to enhance the service.
