Job summary

The gynaecology outpatient centre offers care to patients with complex women's health issues from a wide ranging patient demographic. The department runs clinics covering different gynaecology needs (fertility/general/oncology/urogynaecology, early pregnancy), with over 10 consultants and specialist nurses, requiring an ability to be able to understand the differing clinical needs for each clinic & work to clearly defined policies and procedures.

Post holders will be expected to undertake training to ensure a basic knowledge or level of competence to be able to assist in the various procedures that are carried out within the different gynaecological clinics. They will be expected to provide an effective, safe, evidence based patient care in accordance with 'The Code' to women with gynaecological problems in the outpatient setting.

The post holder will be a registered nurse with the expertise and skills to be able to assess, plan and implement individual patient's care; being accountable for their own actions. It requires highly developed communication and negotiation skills with the ability to liaise between primary and secondary care to ensure patients receive continuity in care. You will also be able to communicate sensitive and complex information to both patients and their carers or families.

Post holders will ensure that patient flow is optimised throughout the department and continue to monitor and improve this by taking part in evaluating processes & systems.

Main duties of the job

To ensure a smooth running of the gynaecology outpatient centre, assisting doctors and specialist nurses whilst seeing patients.

Taking telephone calls and advising patients as needed.

Participating in essential audits.

Ensuring equipment is in full working order and stock available.

Reporting issues to senior nurse.

Mentoring junior colleagues.

To act as a direct point of contact during appointment. This will include providing advice on any treatments or procedures that may be needed. The post holder will be expected to provide both standard and expert advice on different range of treatments and diagnostic tests.

Administer drugs and treatments as prescribed according to NMC guidelines and the Trusts guidelines for the safe and Secure Handling of Medicines

Ensure patients have a clear understanding of the clinical situation are prepared to provide informed consent.
