Job summary

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery with subspecialty interests in Hand and Wrist Surgery.

The appointed candidate will work as part of a large Trauma & Orthopaedic Department across sites including the Major Trauma Centre at Royal Sussex County Hospital and a tertiary elective unit, Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre (SOTC), on the Princess Royal Hospital site, Haywards Heath.

The appointed candidate is expected to be confident managing the whole spectrum of hand and wrist injuries and pathologies. They should also have experience working with polytrauma patients in order to support the ward care of such patients at RSCH.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

o Running the hand trauma week service 1 week in 4 - Monday - Friday 08.00 - 17.00 each dayo Leading the major trauma ward round at RSCH 1 weekend in 8o Delivering an elective hand and wrist service via clinics, MDTs and operating theatre listso Engaging with research, audit and all other supporting activities necessary to deliver excellent tertiary care.

The appointed candidate is expected to manage all soft tissue and bony hand and wrist injuries referred to RSCH and PRH during the hand trauma weeks. It is essential that they are able to treat complex carpal injuries, tendon lacerations and peripheral nerve injuries. The hand on call weeks are 1 week in 4 Monday to Friday with no out of hours responsibility. In addition the appointed candidate will be expected to support the major trauma service by leading ward rounds at RSCH of the major trauma patients 1 weekend in 8. The ward rounds run on Saturday and Sunday mornings and also entail no out of hours cover.

The post holder will have the opportunity to build an elective practice that meets their hand and wrist interests, in conjunction with the other members of the hand and wrist team. They will form part of the hand MDT group. Elective surgery will be undertaken at the SOTC.

The Job Plan contains 40 hours a week, separated into 10 x 4 hour segments known as a PA (Programmed Activity). These 10 PAs will consist of 8 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) PAs for clinic and theatre lists, and 2 Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) PAs for administrative work, teaching and supervision roles.
