Surgical Site Infection Surveillance Nurse

Job summary

  • The Surveillance nurse acts as a member of the MSK and Surgery team assisting in providing service for the prevention, surveillance, investigation and control of infection for University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust and other contracted agencies. They will ensure a comprehensive service is provided to the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • Supports the Consultant for Infection control in the development systems and processes for surveillance and other key indicators for infection control policies and practices.

  • Ensures that accurate and detailed information is collected.

  • Supports the infection control team in the collection and analysis of relevant data for the Surgical Team.

  • Works as part of the Surgical Team to provide, develop and promote a high-quality Surgical Site Surveillance Service promoting excellence throughout the Trust.

  • Be responsible for collating surveillance clinical data for the information of the Surgical Team.

  • Assists with the preparation of statistical information as required and collates and records relevant data and information.

  • Use clinical expertise and judgement to identify patient suitability for inclusion in surveillance.

  • Ensures that data is available for validation and analyses by Consultant in Infection control

  • Identifies early problems arising and ensures these are reported to the Senior Surveillance Nurse Specialist.

  • Ensures that national SSI audits are accurate and correct

  • Support the wound care clinic, undertaking dressing changes and uploading of wound photographs to data base.

  • Works with all members of the surgical and infection control teams and other Trust staff in the establishment and revision of policies/guidelines and other documentation relating to surgical site infection/ infection control and ensures implementation across the Trust.

  • Be aware of the need to provide adequate cover on both sites and assist the senior members of the team in ensuring this is provided.

  • Assists with the preparation of surveillance and audit reports on behalf of the team.

  • Communicates sensitive information to patients and relatives concerning their medical condition in an appropriate, compassionate and professional manner.
