Job summary

This post is offered as a 12 month fixed term post. The appointee will be part of a team of 9 neurosurgical consultants and four spinal consultants delivering regional adult spinal neurosurgical services. The neurosurgery unit in Sussex is based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in the newly opened Louisa Martindale Building where all elective and emergency activity takes place in dedicated theatres. There is a combined neurosurgical and orthopaedic spinal surgery service with a separate 24/7 on call rota. The neurosurgical ward is also located in the Louisa Martindale Building with a current bedbase of 38 beds with expansion planned in line with plans to expand catchment area to deliver care to all of Sussex. Spinal trauma is accommodated in the Major Trauma on the Millennium Building of the Royal Sussex County. The service has two dedicated overnight recovery beds for postoperative care and access up to 9 Neurosurgical ITU and HDU beds on level 5. There are currently 3 theatres dedicated to Neurosurgery and Spine in the newly opened Louisa Martindale Building. These state of art facilities include interoperative MRI. There is a large recovery area with dedicated overnight recovery beds for Neurosurgical and Spinal patients. There is a dedicated biplane angiogram suite adjacent to the theatres.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for experienced clinician with appropriate expertise to work independently in the specified areas as well as participate on a general cranial on call rota. This is a full time clinical post. Please note that the area of subspecialist interest (complex spinal surgery) is fixed and applicants will be expected to demonstrate experience of autonomous practice in these areas appropriate to consultant level in order to be considered.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a team of 13 consultants including 4 dedicated spinal surgeons in order to deliver regional adult neurosurgical and spinal services. There may be a requirement to travel to deliver care at another site but this would be unusual. This is a post that will offer equivalent standing and responsibilities to other consultant colleagues. They will undertake outpatient clinics on both sites and elective and emergency operating and on call work for emergencies at the RSCH. This post is a specialist adult complex spinal surgery post as part of an integrated neurosurgical and orthopaedic spinal service with on-call commitments for spinal surgery. The successful applicant will be expected to work actively towards developing the units goal of developing further over the forthcoming months and years. This service is expected to meet the requirements laid out in the specialised services commissioning documents published by NHS England. The post holder is also expected to fully participate in all departmental activities including teaching, training, audit and clinical governance. The candidate will ideally have undertaken a Spinal Surgery fellowship and will need to be competent in the management of spinal trauma. The clinical duties of the post include the following: Provision of emergency and elective spinal surgeon Provision of outpatient clinics Provision of advice to colleagues in multidisciplinary meetings within Trust and MSK network Supervision of trainees and spinal practitioners Spinal Surgery On Call Commitment: currently 1 in 5 with internal cover The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis. We have trainees at all levels (F1 to ST8). The successful candidate would be expected to take part in training and ongoing assessment along with supporting our commitment to teaching medical students from Brighton and Sussex Medical school (BSMS).
