University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279)

The closing date is 10 December 2024

Job summary

We are looking for an energetic, innovative individual to join the ongoing evolution of our Acute Medicine service including the further development of Same Day Emergency Care(SDEC). We are currently embarking upon a national funded £4.5m capital works to provide a single point of access co-located UTC. This, alongside work to expand SDEC services, will further enable our vision of a streamlined and collaborative Urgent and Emergency Care service for our local population.

The post-holder will join a friendly and highly motivated team of consultants committed to running an excellent unit with positive energy and a fantastic learning environment. Our aim is to provide first class care for our patients from arrival to discharge, innovate in new ways of delivering Acute Medical Care and ensuring rapid access to 'the right service at the right time.'

This post is based on the 67-bedded Emergency Floor(EF) at Worthing Hospital - rated Outstanding by the CQC. The EF was a pilot site for the Royal College of Physicians'(RCP) Future Hospital Programme and has received significant national and international interest since opening, with excellent opportunities for service developments. The co-location of admissions to Medicine, Surgery and the Department of Elderly - through a bespoke Acute Frailty Service Unit - is the 'unique selling point' of this forward-looking department. This system works well for patients and has had consistently excellent feedback from trainees.

Main duties of the job

The appointed consultant will be a committed team member striving to improve, deliver good patient care and respond to ongoing challenges in Acute Medicine. The clinical duties of the post include the following:- Post take ward rounds, patient reviews (which includes review of results as well as seeing patients and their relatives),- Once weekly evening consultant review shift,- Supporting junior doctors,- Facilitating discharges,- Service development,- Clinical and managerial leadership.

This is Acute Medicine the way you always imagined it would be - interesting, dynamic, exciting and requiring flexibility and adaptability. The nature of the Emergency Floor concept means that there is less demarcation between types of DCC activity then in more traditional posts, and this is reflected in the Job Plan, and the ways of working within the team, allowing for attendance at MDT meetings, x-ray discussions, and case presentations. The Emergency Floor rota is designed to provide a good balance between non-clinical and clinical time ensuring continuity and logical allocation of roles during the day.

On Call Commitment:There is an Acute Medicine weekend rota that runs alongside the GIM rota with a 1:87 frequency - delivering 08h00-19h00 cover on the Emergency Floor 365-days per year. The AIM Consultants also contribute to the week-day medical on call rota on a 1:14 frequency.

Full-time / Part-time including participation in a 10.0 PA job plan
