Job summary

The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton is part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. We provide general acute services to the general populations in the City of Brighton and Hove and in Mid Sussex and more specialist and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the south coast of England, including being one of the Major Trauma Units along the South East Coast.

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic experienced Orthopaedic and Vascular physiotherapist to join our well established service.

We are looking for a forward thinking clinician who has substantial experience, at Band 7 level including Orthopaedics and Vascular.

Working within the Major Trauma, Orthopaedic and Vascular Team (MTVO), you will lead a small team providing inpatient care to the Orthopaedic and Vascular wards at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. You will be involved in assessing and treating orthopaedic and vascular patients from both emergency and elective admissions. You will also be involved in managing and taking part in the Orthopaedic weekend service.

Main duties of the job

The Orthopaedic and Vascular Physiotherapy team sit within the Major trauma, vascular and orthopaedic Physiotherapy Team (MTVO). by B8a The Band 7 Orthopaedic and Vascular Physiotherapy Lead is responsible to the B8a MTVO lead and Head of Physiotherapy Inpatients. Responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the Vascular and Orthopaedic Physiotherapy team based at The Royal Sussex County Hospital within the MTVO group. Responsible for planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the Vascular and Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Service on a day-to-day basis.

Provide Joint Leadership across all BSUH sites for the BSUH Orthopaedic vascular team. *

Toprovide specialist advice to other professionals both within the Trust and outside agencies e.g. discharge coordinators, nursing staff, and other health and social service colleagues.

To be responsible for teaching, supervision and appraisal of Band 6, Band 5, and Physiotherapy Technical Instructor/Assistant grade staff, and undergraduate students to ensure a high quality of clinical care within the speciality.

To develop specialty standards based on national standards, where they exist and on best evidence. To ensure that these standards are monitored and adhered to by all members of the in-patient Orthopaedic and vascular Physiotherapy team within the designated area.

To plan and undertake the evaluation of practice and performance throughout the designated area through clinical audit and studies and make recommendations for change.

To support more junior staff within the department to undertake clinical audit.

To demonstrate a sound understanding of Clinical Governance and Risk Management and ensure its effective application to the work situation, guided by the physiotherapy management as needed.

People Management and Development

As an onsite clinical lead for the in-patient Orthopaedic and vascular Physiotherapy service, be responsible for the day-to-day management, supervision and co-ordination of the in-patient Orthopaedic and Vascular Physiotherapy team at RSCH, including allocation of work, staff appraisal and performance management.

To be jointly responsible for the operational management of the in-patient Orthopaedic and Vascular Physiotherapy team across all BSUH sites, coordinating, delivering and evaluating the Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Service on a day-to-day basis, and to be flexible to work across sites.

To support the physiotherapy management in matters of grievance and disciplinary action if and when necessary.

To assist where necessary in the interviewing and appointment of new Trust Physiotherapy staff.
