Job summary

Our Trust currently offers Clinical fellow posts as we recognise that posts combining time spent working clinically with protected time for professional development at an early stage in a Doctors career are attractive. We have had Fellows undertake roles in leadership, research and teaching in their protected time, as well as others who develop a specialty interest to build a competitive CV. Previous Clinical Fellows have told us that the posts are excellent for training and career progression. Most go on to get training positions in their chosen specialty. These jobs are designed to support junior doctor's career development whilst enabling sustainability and job satisfaction.

We now in the third year of these exciting and innovative Clinical Teaching Fellow post with a primary focus on Undergraduate Medical Education, and to support the successful candidates in obtaining a recognised teaching qualification, PGCert through the University of Sussex. The posts will be managed within the Unscheduled Care division with posts available in ED and in Acute Medicine.

Main duties of the job

The Educational Duties of the post include the following:

  • Liaising with the Sub Deans, and the BSMS Year leads to ensure that all medical Students are welcomed into the departments
  • Ensure that medical Students get quality teaching - both bedside and Formal (Year 3s and 5s)
  • Design and deliver teaching to support this
  • Be part of the SIM faculty, designing and delivering SIM training to Medical Students and other HCP's.
  • Be a point of Contact for the Sub Dean, the BSMS year leads and the students within the department.
  • Participate in Medical Student OSCE's ( with training)

The clinical duties of the post will vary according to the grade of the successful appointee but include the following:

  • Working with a Zoned team consisting of an SHO and FY1 to see the new admissions as part of the post take Consultant ward round in the mornings,
  • Reviewing patients who are in the emergency floor longer than 24 hours.
  • Supporting the smooth running of the team to facilitate timely discharges
  • Assessing and treating acutely deteriorating patients
  • Assessing patients referred from the Emergency Department or via the GP as part of the Unselected medical Take
  • Assessing and treating patients in the Same Day Emergency Care setting
  • Reviewing 'clinic' type patients brought back to SDEC and communicating with the GP's
