The post offers excellent experience in inpatient Geriatric Medicine and same day emergency care. This job would suit an experienced specialty doctor looking to develop their career further.
Main duties of the job
The Geriatric team provides a front door frailty service which involves seeing frail older people as they present to Accident & Emergency. As part of the post, the applicant will take part in regular frailty weeks when they will be part of the frailty team, seeing and assessing patients presenting acutely. Geriatric inpatient ward work and frailty SDEC (including regular weekend work in Frailty SDEC with compensatory rest days)

The Geriatric Medicine department works across Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) and Newhaven Community ward. This post is primarily based at Royal Sussex County Hospital on our wards. The Geriatric Medicine team work both on the acute floor and across level 8 in the new Louisa Martindale building with short stay frailty areas, general geriatrics and dementia specialist areas as well as daily rapid access clinic with the development of a frailty SDEC in due course.
There is opportunity to work within our soon to open Frailty SDEC as well as engage in departmental service development and quality improvement.
As an experienced specialty doctor, you will be expected to lead the team of junior doctors, supported by the Consultants, in providing high quality care and ensuring timely discharge for inpatients on one of our wards. The wards have dedicated multidisciplinary team with daily board rounds which supports the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment of our patients.

Essential
- Basic medical degree
- Completed or working towards MRCP or appropriate specialist qualification
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
- Relevant experience in specialty/ sub-specialty - minimum of four years postgraduate medical experience with at least two years within Geriatric Medicine.
- Appropriate progression of career to date
- Clinical skills expected of an experienced specialty dr with at least 2 years experience within geriatric medicine
- Understanding of clinical risk management
- Knowledge and use of evidence based practice
- Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching
- Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
- Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints.
- Evidence of participation in audit
- Evidence of:- Good communication skills both oral and written
Desirable
- An interest in Medicine for Older People and knowledge and understanding of the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment.
- Experience in Geriatric medicine.
- Recognised teaching qualification
- Breadth of experience in and outside specialty
- Evidence of managerial skills: Achievements / Course attended
