Job summary

Applications are invited for the above post ofConsultant Clinical Oncologist with an interest in Neuro & Thyroid Oncology, based at the Sussex Cancer Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton but with sessions throughout the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

The "Sussex Cancer Centre Oncology Service" is a team of oncologists who are employed through University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust working across the county providing clinical and medical oncology care to the population of Sussex. This includes provision of non-surgical cancer treatments across 5 hospital locations - Hastings, Eastbourne, Brighton, Haywards Heath and Worthing and acute service support in Chichester.

The new appointee will work alongside colleagues in the neuro-oncology and head and neck (thyroid) tumour reference group which comprises of a mutliprofessional team including clinical oncologists, medical oncologists, pharmacists, clinical nurse specialists and cancer support workers. There is also a close working relationship and co-located clinics with the regional urology surgical teams. We are also developing our oligometastatic radiotherapy service and the post holder will be part of that development and clinical expansion.

The appointee will have an On Call Commitment at the Royal Sussex County Hospital on a >1:9 rota (currently 1:16).

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Consultant Clinical Oncologist with an interest in Neuro-oncology and Thyroid cancer to join the team.

The appointee will join the team of 30 Clinical/medical consultant oncologists who works across Sussex (Worthing, Brighton, Haywards Heath, Eastbourne and Hastings) in delivering a comprehensive oncology service for patients from across the Trust. Key duties will include regular outpatient clinics, MDM attendance, radiotherapy consideration and planning, SACT prescribing and oversight, clinical supervision of non-medical staff, clinical governance, service developments, ward reviews and on call. It is anticipated that the post holder will look to take on leadership/development roles within the division and will be supported to do so. It is also anticipated that the post holder will take an active role in education for trainees at all grades.

The appointee will contribute to teaching and supervision of medical students, junior medical staff and AHP/nurses.

Applicants are encouraged to take part in Audit and support junior team members in their Audit projects. There are opportunities for clinical cancer research and will be supported by a divisional lead for research.

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
