Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Orthodontic team at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton as an Orthodontic Therapist. The post holder will work independently carrying out active treatment, for both adult and paediatric patients, to prescriptions by the Consultant Orthodontists.

Main duties of the job

Based on the General Dental council scope of practice: clean and prepare tooth surfaces ready for orthodontic treatment identify, select, use and maintain appropriate instruments insert passive removable orthodontic appliances insert removable appliances activated or adjusted by a dentist remove fixed appliances, orthodontic adhesives and cement identify, select, prepare and place auxiliaries take impressions make a patient's orthodontic appliance safe in the absence of a dentist fit orthodontic headgear fit orthodontic facebows which have been adjusted by a dentist take occlusal records take intra and extra-oral photographs place brackets and bands prepare, insert, adjust and remove archwires previously prescribed or, where necessary, activated by a dentist give advice on complex appliance care and oral health instruction Provide highly specialist Clinical Technical services and advice on the full range of dental appliances fit tooth separators and bonded retainers keep full, accurate and contemporaneous patient records give appropriate patient advice

The post holder is responsible for providing highly specialist care and to contribute to the clinical management of patients requiring orthodontic treatment, working in collaboration with consultants in order to improve patient care. They will follow treatment plans in close liaison within the Orthodontic team including Consultants undertaking, for example clinical record taking, removable appliance treatment, fixed appliance placement and removal and emergency orthodontic care.

The post holder may be involved with patients who have had significant jaw surgery and therefore the post holder will need to work with the clinical team to make sure the patient is able to understand the complexity of the surgery and other facial changes. This may be challenging and require interpersonal and communication skills to help the patients understanding of the changes which can be life changing.

They are responsible for maintaining high standards of clinical care with reference to relevant research and evidence based practice. They maintain their own standard of practice and keep up to date adhering to CPD and appraisal protocols.

  • BDA Approved Diploma for Orthodontic Therapists
  • One of the following qualifications; The National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) National Certificate examination o The S/NVQ Level 3 in Oral Healthcare: Dental Nursing awarded by an approved NVQ or SVQ provider o A Certificate of Proficiency in Dental Nursing awarded by a recognised Dental Hospital o BTEC National Diploma Dental Technology o SQA Higher National Certificate in Dental Technology o Degree in Dental Technology o City and Guilds Final Certificate in Dental Technology o BTEC National Diploma in Science (Dental Technology) o BTEC Diploma in Dental Technology o SCOTVEC Higher National Certificate in Dental Technology o Edexcel BTEC Higher National Certificate o Army - Levels 1, 2 and 3 (Dental Technology) o Qualifications awarded by Technicians Education Council or Scottish Technicians Education Council o Any qualification determined by the GDC to entitle registration as a dental hygienist or dental therapist o Formal training and accreditation combined with other training, experience and self-study will result in theoretical or conceptual knowledge to the equivalent of masters degree level.
