University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279)

Job summary

We are looking for a Consultant Colleague to help us with our management of the Medical Retinal services need in our local areas. This is a replacement post following a retirement.

We are a small, friendly department and provide world class care in our two Ophthalmological surgical centres, at St Richard's, Chichester and Southlands Hospital which is a state of the art centre, built in 2017. There has been a substantial investment in the service in recent years to help us manage our workload.

We have 3 Vitreo-retinal surgeons who provide surgical management of retinal pathology.

Outside of work, West Sussex is an incredible place to live, offering a life on the South coast, with Southlands Hospital within walking distance of the sea. Life with us offers opportunities outside of work - please get in touch and come for a look around.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will lead on management of Medical Retinal pathology. The operative side will be focused on phacoemulsification. We are currently re-designing our cataract pathway to improve the efficiency of the service. The applicant will also lead in providing clinical input to our Diabetic Eye Services screening services which is a well established programme which consistently produces good results.

University Hospitals Sussex was created by a merger of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals and Western Sussex Hospitals. We work closely with our Ophthalmic colleagues who are in the Sussex Eye Hospital, and we see this relationship becoming closer as time progresses.

The on call commitment for this post is a 1 in 9 in conjunction with the other Consultants; there is a separate VR on call element which is provided in conjunction with the Sussex Eye Hospital. The applicant for this post will cover the general oncall services only.

There is more information on the duties of the role within the job description.
