Job summary

We are pleased to advertise a full time Consultant Neurologist joint post hosted by University Hospitals Sussex NHS FT and working with University Hospital Southampton NHS FT.

The post will be appointed to University Hospitals Sussex NHS FT.

The post is open to doctors with relevant and appropriate experience in Neurology who hold a CCT or expect to be able to do so within 6m of appointment. We would particularly welcome candidates with an interest in neurogenetics and muscle disorders.

At University Hospitals Sussex, the postholder will be responsible for the day-to-day care of Neurology inpatients and the running of outpatient clinics.

This is a new full time consultant post, resulting from increased demand for outpatient and inpatient neurological services

At University Hospital Southampton, the post holder will provide general neurology clinics, genetics clinics and muscle clinics.

The post holder will have Neurology inpatients in the Wessex Neurological Centre (UHS) where there are 25 beds designated for Neurology inpatients. Joint ward rounds are encouraged and ward rounds for each consultant usually do not exceed 3 hours per week

At University Hospitals Sussex, the clinical duties of the post include the following:

To be responsible for neurological management of inpatients and outpatients at St Richards Hospital and to supervise the care of neurology inpatients at RSCH of St Richards patients referred for tertiary investigations and management.

At St Richards Hospital

To hold 2 general neurology outpatient clinics weekly.

To share responsibility for any patient admitted directly under or transferred to the care of the neurology inpatient wards or SGH.

To participate in the neurology departments regular ward referral service at SRH. Currently the new post holder will see ward referral on up to two days per week, with other Consultants responsible for the other days.

To share responsibility for any patient admitted directly under or transferred to the care of the neurology department.

Responsibility for general professional training of the junior medical staff and contributing to the training of nurses and other staff, participating in the activities of the Post Graduate Medical Centre including medical audit.

Administrative duties associated with the care of the patients, training, and running of the clinical department.

To undertake out of hours responsibility for the UHSx non-resident neurology on call as per rota (1 in 8 approx). On Call Commitment: Rota frequency <1 in 8. Category B. 2% supplement

The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

At University Hospital Southampton, the post holder will provide general neurology clinics.

A typical 4 hour general neurology outpatient clinic template will consist of 5 new patients and 6 follow up patients.

The post holder will have Neurology inpatients in the Wessex Neurological Centre (UHS) where there are 25 beds designated for Neurology inpatients. Joint ward rounds are encouraged and ward rounds for each consultant usually do not exceed 3 hours per week.

The post holder and other consultant colleagues will be expected to cover each others absences on annual or study leave, so far as is practicable. The post holder will be required to participate in medical audit and continuing medical education, as well as continuing professional development.

The appointee will be expected to take part in the teaching of undergraduate and junior medical staff and also in the teaching of trainee neurologists at all stages. The appointee will also be expected to participate in clinical research and to support research activities of the trainees. Participation in the teaching of other clinical staff is also expected.

The post-holder will be required to undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of clinical departments and to travel as necessary between units.

Secretarial support and office accommodation is provided.

From time to time it may be necessary for the post holder to carry out such other duties as may be assigned with agreement by the Trust. It is expected that the post-holder will not unreasonably withhold agreement to any proposed changes.
