Job summary

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join the Renal Dialysis Team at the Worthing Dialysis Satellite Unit on Dixon Ward based in Worthing Hospital.You will work alongside experienced renal staff to provide safe effective care for our patients.

We are looking to recruit 2 dynamic and forward thinking dialysis health care assistant to work as part of this team. Renal dialysis experience is essential for this role.

The successful candidate will be trained in all aspects of the role with competency based assessments and mentoring.

This is currently a 6 day week service

This advert is for two HCA posts, one full time and one part time (31.5 hours a week).

Main duties of the job

The role mainly consists of assisting the nursing staff in planning, implementing and evaluating the care of out- patients attending for renal replacement therapy. It is also to be involved in ordering dialysis consumables, stocking up of the unit with dialysis fluids, blood lines and other dialysis equipment. It also involves moving dialysis machines, dialysis fluid trollies, chairs, assisting with patients mobility needs, keeping the unit tidy and disposal of any clinical and general waste generated during dialysis.

Job responsibilities

Participates as a member of the department team providing the highest standard of patient care.

Liaise effectively with all staff working within the department, based at renal satellite unit.

To teach and train new staff on basic haemodialysis skills.

To be active in enhancing own personal knowledge base..

To actively work at all times within the Trust policies and procedures.

To maintain confidentiality of all information obtained through professional attendance on patients or through clinical access.

Act responsibly in emergency situations, in accordance with Trust policies and procedures, in the absence of medical support.

To act competently and demonstrates an understanding and knowledge of the principles of haemodialysis and its effect on the patient.

Report any change in patients condition or any problems or hazards within the department to the nurse in charge.

Perform basic nursing care for the patients i.e. general hygiene, assisting patients as necessary.

To prepare haemodialysis machines and equipment as necessary to undertake a safe and successful dialysis session.

To be actively involved in the assessment, planning, monitoring and evaluation of patient care prior to, during and post haemodialysis. Demonstrates and ability to trouble shoot haemodialysis problems and report accordingly. Performs and records accurate observations of BP and TPR and weight gains and report as necessary. Perform ECG where appropriate.

Competent in performing cannulation of grafts and fistulas. To procure and safely send off clinical specimens as instructed by the nurse or clinician.

To have a good understanding of performing asepsis and its appropriate use.

To have an understanding of the dietary and fluid requirements of dialysis patients.

In the context of own knowledge, experience and sphere of responsibility, assist colleagues and those less experienced to develop competence in accordance with their needs. Act as a resource and support to all new health care assistants, students and peers.

To be flexible at times in shift patterns..

To actively participate in day to day upkeep of stock levels and cleanliness. Undertake housekeeping tasks such as cleaning chair, tables, equipment. Disposal of dirty linen in accordance with trust policies.

Clinical role to include: venepuncture, specifically cannulation of fistulae intravenous drugs..

To support registered staff in the nurse led satellite dialysis setting ensuring patients care and well-being is paramount.
