Job summary

Through strong leadership and effective management, the Lead Midwife for Education and Training will support the site based education / practice development team to promote and deliver excellence, while maintaining and continually improving clinical standards evidenced by achievement of key quality performance indicators and national drivers. Your responsibility will be to ensure that the required compliance regarding training standards are met within the key areas set out in the Maternity Incentive Scheme (Year 5) and also that national recommendations from the Ockenden report and the Maternity and Neonatal three year plan are met.This will be achieved through high visibility, accessibility, and surveillance and taking a multidisciplinary approach to education and training. Although based at Brighton and Haywards Heath Hospitals there will be expectation to support the education across the four maternity sites of UH Sussex and travel across all areas.

Main duties of the job

You must demonstrate clinical expertise, competency in practice and behave as a role model in line with the Trust values.

Line Management of the site based Maternity Education Team including the preceptorship and practise education facilitators ensuring the preceptorship programme is constantly reviewed and the student's achieve the best possible experience and learning opprotunities.Oversee, support and participate as appropriate in the delivery of training programmers including PROMPT, Fetal Surveillance and Neonatal Life Support for the wider multidisciplinary team and provide the requested data to evidence compliance.To ensure the training provided is in line with local, regional and national standards which will include involvement with colleagues within the obstetric, anesthetic and neonatal services as well as maternity.To provide guidance, support and effective clinical leadership for not only the education team but for all staff undertaking training within maternity services, taking a share of responsibility for standards of clinical practice and help create an environment where excellent clinical care is provided.Please refer to attached Job Description for full list of responsibilities

Job responsibilities

  • The post holder will provide strategic direction and leadership in the development and implementation of training programmes for existing registered and unregistered health care professionals (bands 2-9) within the maternity service at UHSussex.
  • To work cohesively and lead and manage the Education team across the maternity service at UHSussex NHS Foundation Trust; including the four main hospital sites and community midwifery settings.
  • To manage programme resources in the most efficient and effective manner; to make a substantially, positive difference to the quality of health services delivered.
  • The post holder will take a lead role in partnership with Midwifery, Quality and Risk Management in developing the directorates strategic direction and policy framework. Ensures the team contributes significantly to the achievement of corporate objectives and values, monitors effective governance arrangements are implemented and maintained.
  • Support compliance with NICE/CQC guidelines where relevant to midwifery and nursing practice, co-ordinate and lead audit of clinical practice.
  • Support compliance with changes relating to the Ockenden Report/CNST requirements and any other recent reviews.
  • The post holder will support the Head of Midwifery to manage the TNA/education budget across UHSussex, linking to service delivery and ensuring right staff with right skills in right place.
  • Provide support and deputise for the Director/Head of Midwifery in relation to Education and Practice Development in their absence.
  • The post is cross site within UHSussex NHS Foundation Trust
  • Participate in the manager on call rota.
