Job summary
We are looking for an outstanding clinician who is also an established, or potential future leader for the development of Chemical Pathology services in Sussex. This is a part-time (8 PA) consultant post, to join the clinical team.
This post will be based centrally at Worthing Hospital, however cross cover will be expected but this will mostly be virtual. Although there are still different systems subsequent to the merger, staff are expected to provide support for the whole trust (and network) as required. There is already a good degree of collaborative working and it is envisioned that many of the activities are site neutral.
University Hospital Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is part of Pathology Network South 7, along with East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust (ESHT). It would be expected that the post holder plays an active role in moving forward these network links and sits on biochemistry and network working parties.
The Chemistry Department currently processes around 12 million tests per year, with services being clinically led. We are looking for an individual who will join and help lead the teams to maintain and develop laboratory services. In addition, the post-holder will support and lead the clinical agenda (lipid clinic primarily) and provide the biochemistry/clinical chemistry components of the curriculum for the medical school (Brighton and Sussex Medical School, BSMS).
Main duties of the job
The clinical duties of the post include the following:
Provision of clinical lipid services
Clinical liaison with service users
Ad hoc dynamic function tests subject to appointee and service interests
Maintain high-quality service and UKAS accreditation
Lead the development of networked pathology solutions in the region
Provide and lead undergraduate clinical chemistry curriculum for Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS)
On Call Commitment: none.
Additional skills required include good IT skills and, or ability and interest to develop, management and leadership skills. Time management skills are required to balance the range of roles and projects which may require input. Team-working is vital to continue the excellent collaborative working models which already exist. Data skills for work such as laboratory reports, business cases and cost efficiency programs are important, and it would be desirable if skills included the ability to support research projects. Academic activities also include provision of support for undergraduate medicine at BSMS and this may be additional or alternative field of interest and expertise. Support will be given to develop skills as required but a proactive and Patient First approach is necessary.

Job description
Job responsibilities
Clinical, scientific and associated duties
The holder of this post will provide a comprehensive Chemical Pathology service for all users of the laboratory, in conjunction with their consultant and clinical scientist colleagues.
The consultant will provide expert support for the diagnosis and management of biochemical clinical problems, advise on appropriate investigations on an individual patient basis and determine the repertoire provided by the Chemical Pathology department within the resources available to the directorate. The consultant will provide clinical leadership and supervision of all aspects of the laboratories undertakings. This will include line-management and appraisal for the Clinical Scientific Staff.
The consultant will work in close partnership with the other full-time consultants and the group of clinical scientists, as well as providing cross-cover for leave. The consultant will be able to authorise results remotely when required.
The clinical service includes an existing lipid clinic and ad hoc dynamic testing service. Currently, with national pressures, the lipid service requires further resource. However the opportunity to develop these and other clinical services further in conjunction with clinical teams at either Trust, on the basis of service demands and the experience and expertise of the individual is encouraged.
The consultant will take a lead role in clinical liaison and clinical audit.
Recognising the national drive towards further development of Pathology networking in England, as set out by NHS Improvement in September 2017, the consultant must have attributes, skills and experience that will make a positive contribution to collaborative working across the proposed network for Sussex.
Teaching
The post-holder will have a major commitment to teaching of undergraduate medical students but also will be expected to participate in clinical teaching of undergraduate and junior medical staff within their supporting Professional Activities as required by the Clinical Unit. If there is a specific interest or need, a more extensive teaching role can be developed within the Clinical Unit structure and under the direction of the Specialty College Tutor. Chemical Pathology teaching forms a significant part of the pathology curriculum at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) and the post holder will be expected to contribute and lead (in collaboration with their consultant and clinical scientist colleagues) on provision of teaching. There will also be opportunities for Senior Lecturer posts, in some specialties, to be offered in the future, or alternative teaching roles. Teaching activities at BSMS can/will be shared with clinical colleagues. The department also has STP trainees and biomedical scientists working towards their specialist portfolios and the post-holder would be expected to contribute to their teaching, training and project supervision.
Research and Development
Research and development activities are an important use of supporting professional activity time. Any time within job plans allocated to R&D should be evidenced in terms of agreed high quality outputs and linking to personal objectives around appraisal.
The post-holder will be encouraged to develop clinical research activity according to their academic interests. University Hospital Sussex NHS Foundation Trust board recognise the importance of clinical research to the provision of safe, high quality, responsive clinical care. They are committed to maximising opportunities for patients to participate in research, and to fostering an environment in which clinical academic activity thrives. Numerous academic and commercial trials and observational studies are in progress at University Hospital Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. Collaborative research relationships within regional and national specialist networks and societies, e.g. Association for Clinical Biochemistry, NIHR CRN: Kent, Surrey & Sussex, will be encouraged.
Clinical trials and other research are managed by the Research and Development team in accordance with the Research Governance Framework, copies of which are available in the Medical Directors Offices. As an employee of University Hospital Sussex NHS Foundation Trust you will be required to comply with all reporting requirements, systems, and duties of action put in place by the Trust to deliver Research Governance Standards.
The Trust management procedures for intellectual property (IP) can be found on the Trust Intranet Site. Trust Procedures are consistent with the Management Framework for IP of the Department of Health. You will be required to comply with these procedures. All bids for research should be worked up in conjunction with the Pathology Executive Team. All NHS Support Costs and Research Costs must be fully funded before projects are started, either by external sources or via the NHS R&D funding schemes. Formal confirmation of Trust approval, facilitated by the Trust R&D office, will be required before proceeding.
Clinical Governance Arrangements
UHSx have comprehensive clinical governance programmes with which the appointee is expected to engage. The appointee is expected to be committed to the improvement of quality of clinical care and to participate in reporting and investigation of incidents and near misses, risk management and respond to complaints. The Trusts currently run a monthly programme of audit and clinical governance activities on a half day rolling basis, which all clinical staff are expected to attend. The department also has an internal programme of audits and participates in EQA schemes covering the tests performed in the department as well as case for comment. The appointee will be expected to actively participate in audit including all relevant audits set out in the Trusts audit plan. They will be expected to initiate and supervise audit projects related to their particular subspecialty interest and will liaise with the specialty audit Lead Consultant.
Appraisal
The appointee is expected to compile an annual portfolio with evidence of continuing professional development in accordance with the Trusts appraisal process. They will be expected to participate in annual appraisal by the designated consultant and to produce a personal development plan that is aligned to priorities within their clinical service which will be shared with the Medical Director and Chief Executive. The appraisal process will also be part of the information used to revalidate Consultants by the GMC.
