Job summary

Applications are invited for two substantive (10PA) Infection Consultants (Microbiology or Microbiology and Infection Diseases) to join our friendly, committed team at Chichester and Worthing, part of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

The Clinical Microbiology Service at St Richard's Hospital (SRH) and Worthing Hospital is provided by five Consultant Microbiologists/ Consultants in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, working closely together to ensure a unified and comprehensive service. One post is available in Chichester where the UKAS accredited Microbiology Laboratory covering West Sussex is situated. The other will be based at Worthing hospital. The post includes participation in a 1 in 5 on-call rota, with one non-workday a week in lieu of predictable on call hours.

University Hospitals Sussex is an innovative trust consisting of four acute hospitals in Brighton, Chichester, Haywards Heath, and Worthing. The recent merger has facilitated closer working with the Infection Team at Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, the Specialist Regional Infectious Diseases Centre, and the Academic Department of Infection and Microbiology at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Opportunities to develop out-patient infection services at Worthing and Chichester may be considered with interested candidates.

Main duties of the job

Our Consultants are responsible for the provision of a high quality, comprehensive and efficient infection service which serve the hospitals and community of West Sussex.

Day-to-day clinical duties includes clinical consults, support interpretation and authorisation of results and providing expert infection advice to clinical and community teams, the Microbiology Laboratory, Infection Prevention and Control teams, and Public Health. The department has a strong reputation for accessibility and ward visibility and the successful candidate will be required to provide a timely clinical liaison service as part of a daily ward round to include Intensive Care and the Admissions units. Regular MDTs currently include OPAT, TB, Haematology, Bone and Joint, Endocarditis, and Diabetic Foot on specific sites, with the potential to develop these further with interested parties.

A formal job plan will be agreed within 3 months of the start of employment and is reviewed annually. The successful candidate will be expected to take a departmental lead role including Laboratory Lead, Antimicrobial Lead, OPAT Lead, Infection Control Doctor, Educational Supervision/Trainee Lead, Clinical Lead.

Consultants are expected to contribute to teaching undergraduate medical students from Brighton and Sussex Medical School, and support training of the Infection Speciality Registrars from the Kent/Sussex/Surrey Scheme.
