Job summary
These posts are being provided as the first step in a vision to improve the Urgent Care facilities available at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. An integral part of that vision is the provision of a reliable Primary Care stream from the front door of the Emergency Department. We want GP's who have an interest in the complex presentations and challenges that present to our doors.
We are seeking energetic and enthusiastic doctors to contribute to the exciting and forward-thinking multidisciplinary Emergency department in the heart of Brighton. This role will bring integrated working to the Emergency Department, with streaming of Primary Care conditions at the 'front door' of our Urgent Care provision. The post will suit Primary Care physicians with an interest in urgent and acute care who wish to join on a sessional basis with a Trust making robust plans for the future of Urgent Care. The ability to self-roster will allow successful candidates to maintain a good work-life balance.
The service is supported by a cohesive and friendly group of consultants with a sound vision of how to progress Emergency Medicine and proactive Consultant and Nursing leads who are developing new ways of working in the ED.

Main duties of the job
The clinical duties of the post include the following:
- To review and assess all patients who present to UTC with conditions that are not immediately life-threatening and to deliver their episode of care in a prompt, high quality, safe and efficient manner.
- To work with other Primary Care colleagues, ED Clinicians and triage staff to review patients who need urgent evaluation +/- basic investigation +/- rapid access to secondary care assessment or advice, where this may avoid admission or allow the patient to be more safely managed at home.
- To ensure safe and adequate handover and discharge of patients from the UTC and to ensure continuity of care for patients who are discharged back into the community (i.e., through clear and concise yet comprehensive documentation).
- When appropriate to use ED protocols in the delivery of care and to assist in developing protocols, policies and services.
- To provide advice and support to Emergency Nurse Practitioners and GP Trainee Doctors and to assist in formal and informal training, orientation and induction.
- Support the smooth and efficient flow of patients through the UTC, working in collaboration with nursing, paramedic, medical and allied health professional colleagues.
- To participate fully in the investigation of complaints, clinical incidents and near misses i.e., providing written statements, adhering to systems and protocols to ensure risks of further incidents are minimized.
