Applications are invited for a Trust Grade for Ophthalmology at the Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton, starting January 2024 until January 2025
The Sussex Eye Hospital within University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist eye hospital and the main training hub of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery/School of Ophthalmology. We serve a population of approximately 750,000, through the hub at the Sussex Eye Hospital and the spoke unit at Princes Royal Hospital
The Sussex Eye Hospital is a specialist eye hospital with 2 dedicated ophthalmic theatres (1 with anaesthetic cover); 1 ward; outpatients department and a 24hr eye casualty service. It serves a population of approximately 750,000, through the hub at the Sussex Eye Hospital and the spoke unit at Princess Royal Hospital with plans in place to work in other locations
The Sussex Eye Hospital has an active role in research, supported by its own research team and the trust research department
Main duties of the job
The clinical duties of the post include the following:
General ClinicsGlaucoma ClinicsOperating lists (surgical glaucoma and cataract)Eye CasualtyLaser clinic
In addition to most general ophthalmic services the Sussex Eye Hospital offers highly specialised ophthalmology tertiary care. With a large number of Surgical and Medical Retina patients, Uveitis patients and Anterior Segment patients, there are many complex glaucoma cases to manage as well as the more straight forward glaucoma suspects, OHT and stable glaucoma patients
The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis

This post is within a well-established, dynamic and cohesive Ophthalmology department. The Trust has a role within Teaching, Trauma and Tertiary service provision in the region; with the RSCH site being a Major Trauma Centre

The Sussex Eye Hospital has an active role in research, supported by its own research team and the trust research departmentIt is part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and plays an important part in undergraduate training in conjunction with Brighton and Sussex medical School and post graduate education and training within the KSS School of OphthalmologyThere are outpatients facilities on both sites, with the main department at Brighton. Both sites have Visual Field analysers and OCT scanning facilities. The main orthoptic department is at SEH but there is also a service at PRH. Most surgery is performed in 2 ophthalmic theatres at SEH, one with anaesthetic cover; and cataract surgery is also performed at PRH.
Other equipment available to the Ophthalmology team includes (most located at SEH):Quantel Medical Easyret retinal laserQuantel Medical Aviso A/B scanZeiss Clarus widefield camera2 x Heidelberg Spectralis OCT scanners3 x Topcon OCT scanner2 x Litechnica SeLecTor Deux YAG/SLT laseriTrace corneal topographerCellChek SL specular microscopeOculus pentacamIOL master x 22 x Humphrey Field AnalyserEye theatres are equipped with Zeiss microscopes and Alcon Constellation and Centurion phacoemusification/vitrectomy machines. Also there are facilities for cryotherapy, endolaser and cyclodiodeWe use Medisoft to record theatre procedures and to supply cataract outcomes to the National Ophthalmology Database, we also use it to log intravitreal injections.
We are in the process of procuring a more comprehensive electronic patient record system.
We have IT, secretarial and administrative support including a failsafe officer
