Job summary

An exciting opportunity is now available to join the Orthopaedic / Rheumatology Outpatient Department at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust as a Health Care Assistant.

The departments are located at both the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, and the Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre (SOTC) at Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath.

Experience in orthopaedics, or rheumatology, and out patients' services would be desirable, but is not essential, however all applicants must have a real commitment to ensuring patient safety and service quality. In these busy outpatient departments' excellent communication and organisational skills are also required to manage time effectively.

Main duties of the job

To take part in meeting the needs of patients under the supervision of a qualified nurse working within the policies and procedures of the Trust.

Be an effective member of the multi-disciplinary team and to contribute to the smooth running of the service.

Job responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist patients within the department with all activities of daily living. Ensuring their privacy and dignity.
  • To take and record observations of temperature, pulse and blood pressure as required, and to be responsible for recording appropriately in the patient notes. Also to weigh and measure a patient when required, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • To have a full understanding of the patients optimum level of mobility and to assist with the movement of patients through different care settings within the hospital.
  • Ensure that stock levels are adequate. For example gauze, dressings, privacy drapes and dressing packs
  • Act as a patient chaperone for medical examinations in clinic when necessary.
  • Ensure the appropriate levels of soap, hand gel and hand towels are maintained and, as necessary, monitor the hygiene standards and escalate as necessary.
  • Check drug levels and expiry dates in the department and to escalate to the necessary individuals to place an order.
  • To resolve day to day issues, and to undertake housekeeping tasks such as cleaning and tidying of clinical rooms, ensuring that the rooms are suitable for clinical use. Also ensure that the disposal of clinical/non waste, and to ensure that sharps boxes are collected by the appropriate team.
