An exciting opportunity has arisen for a new position at Newhaven Community ward as a Practice Development Nurse. The post-holder will be responsible for providing a progressive learning environment for all grades of nursing staff here at Newhaven ward.

The Practice Development Nurse (PDN) role is there to help support and educate health care staff. The PDNs are tasked to provide extensive clinical advice and support to enhance the knowledge base and practical skills of newly qualified nurses, healthcare assistants, nursing associates and other learners in the wards.
The post will be based at Newhaven Community Ward, which is on the site of the old Newhaven Downs Hospital. The unit is for patients who no longer require acute hospital care but need further skilled nursing and therapeutic support such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy before leaving NHS inpatient care altogether. A team of nurses, therapists, doctors and support staff will care for 34 patients in the ward, supporting them to recover before they move on.
Main duties of the job
- Lead on orientation and competency programmes, a development programme for new nurses, incorporating theoretical teaching, clinical skills assessment & formulation of personal development plans.
- Facilitates the professional development and education of all members of staff in a positive learning environment.
- The post holder works closely with the RSCH Care of the Elderly Speciality Medicine Practice Nurse Educator and university lecturers on pathway courses at the University of Brighton, ensuring links between theory and practice are securely comprehended and implemented.
- As educator for specialist medicine, the post holder will provide advice and guidance to other personnel, will undertake audit and assist with the development of professional policies, standards & best practice guidelines.
- The role also involves representing the Trust at local level. The post holder works without direct supervision.

- To develop and implement a range of speciality Medicine training and education programmes to all nursing staff & other members of the multidisciplinary team where appropriate. Occasionally required to make presentations at nursing forums and other events. To provide informal/formal teaching sessions for colleagues, explaining & demonstrating complex nursing principles & practical skills.
- Identify and plan future educational requirements within the wards, discuss essential educational resources with ward Manager and lead educator.
- To establish links with all educational providers, for example University, maximising learning opportunities in this field and in so doing, facilitate the planning and delivery of educational programmes.
- Undertake assessment of practice and supervision of nursing staff on pre & post - basic education courses. Provide clinical supervision, highly specialist advice and assess competence in clinical practice.
- To maintain and promote links with higher education facilities, in particular in relation to curriculum development and evaluation of courses in conjunction with the trust lead for nurse education
Leadership

Research
- To foster the philosophy of evidence - based practice, analysing, interpreting & implementing research findings, to ensure effective and innovative nursing practice.
- Lead on auditing the clinical education environment, in conjunction with Brighton University and the trust Practice development team. Implement changes where necessary, maintain accurate data, staff training and developmental records. Auditing practice-using research tools, for example questionnaires, and collating results.
- Participates in the hospitals involvement in clinical research trials within the Medical wards where appropriate.
Communication
- To work collaboratively with other Trust practice educators/facilitators & fellow practice educators across the network, to promote cohesive best practice & share resources.
- To be an expert in care delivered within the speciality medicine area of Newhaven. Effectively interpreting & communicating specialist information to colleagues & patients where appropriate.
- To communicate highly sensitive and detailed information relating to a patients condition, to relatives, with tact, empathy and skill. Breaking bad news to distressed families.
- To have excellent interpersonal, communication team skills, liaising with patients and relatives, utilising other healthcare professionals and specialists, interpreting and sharing detailed and complex information.
