Job summary
The Dermatology department in Brighton has a high patient throughput of 34,000 consultations per annum. Approximately 16,000 new patients & 18,000 follow ups are seen with 2,600 minor procedures conducted in the dermatology day-case theatres and minor treatment rooms. There are specialist clinics for patients with Psoriasis, Eczema Melanoma, Immunosuppressed skin surveillance, Paediatric dermatology, Vulval disease, Hair and Scalp disorders, Psychodermatology, Teledermatology, and Hidradenitis Suppurativa. A phototherapy unit provides a full range of treatments include narrowband TLO1, PUVA treatment, and hand/foot PUVA. Skin Cancer forms a large proportion of the Dermatology workload in Brighton and Sussex. Most of our consultants have regular two week wait clinics and operating lists. We have two purpose built daycase theatres as well as minor ops treatment rooms in outpatients.
Clinics are 4 hours, with 3.5 hours of patient consultations and 30 minutes immediate clinic administration. We allocate 1 hour per clinic for subsequent clinic admin. Clinics at non-base sites are reduced to allow for travel time. 30 minutes of admin time are allocated for a surgical list.
Main duties of the job
The clinical duties of the post include the following:
- These posts are aimed at general Dermatologists with opportunities to develop a special area of interest; we would particularly welcome one applicant to develop a special interest in Paediatric Dermatology or MDT Lead. The clinical duties are predominantly outpatient based consultations, with daycase theatre lists for those who are interested. The post holder will be expected to take part in the Monday-Friday in office hours on call rota offering supervision to the acute hospitals (Royal Sussex County Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital). Supervising specialty registrars, general practitioner speciality doctors, trainees, physician associates and nurses is a core part of the consultant role in our department
- The appointee is expected to be committed to the improvement of quality of clinical care and to participate in incident reporting, risk management and safety, quality and performance clinical governance meetings.
- The appointee will be expected to actively participate in audit including all relevant audits set out in the Trust's Audit Plan.
- The post holder will be expected to participate in clinical teaching of undergraduate and junior medical staff within their Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) as required by the Clinical Unit. The Brighton and Sussex Medical School, which opened in 2003, will present opportunities for participation in undergraduate education.
