An incredible opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, committed and clinically excellent midwife to take up and develop the role of Consultant Midwife here at University Hospitals Sussex.
This role will be based at our Worthing and Chichester hospital sites working closely with the Consultant Midwife at Haywards Heath and Brighton. There will be an expectation of working across site.
You will be an exceptional individual with vision and drive, passion and intellect as well as a broad range of strategic and professional skills. The individual must be fully committed to midwifery practice, safety and be able to demonstrate a high level of organisational, analytical and leadership skills. The successful candidate must also have excellent communication skills, emotional intelligence and be a team player. Liaison with the Director of Midwifery, the midwifery leadership team, Service team, the consultant body and wider MDT will be a key element of the role. As a visible and credible leader you will provide highly specialist expert advice on all aspects of midwifery care across UH Sussex with an emphasis on facilitating and leading the education team.
The postholder will be expected to contribute to the education, training and development of student midwives, midwives, nurses and healthcare support workers. The consultant midwife is expected to develop links with higher education institutions contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of education.
Main duties of the job
The aim of the Consultant Midwife is to be a role model leading expert practice in midwifery, and to ensure all midwifery practice us underpinned by a philosophy of maximising health for women of child bearing age. He/she will empower midwives to promote health throughout the service.
The Consultant Midwife will promote pregnancy and birth as a positive experience with subsequent health gains to the woman physically, mentally and sociologically. She/he will be expected to function as an independent practitioner who will work in collaboration with appropriate medical and allied healthcare practitioners and provide clinical leadership in order to lead service development and improvement of maternal health and wellbeing.
The Consultant Midwife will lead the development and implementation of quality initiatives and health programmes to reduce health inequalities, Increase normality and improve outcomes for mothers and babies and will share this knowledge locally, regionally and nationally.

As an expert midwife they will have extensive theoretical and practical knowledge and experience of the clinical skills needed within a modern maternity setting. They will be expected to facilitate the advancement of choice and equality across the care continuum through teaching, research and clinical practice and will act as the clinical midwifery expert in all clinical settings.
A key responsibility is to ensure that the families experience is of the highest quality, inspiring public confidence. The post holder will ensure that all people are treated with compassion, dignity and respect placing value on the diversity of the local community and beyond. This will be achieved through high visibility, accessibility and surveillance. The post holder will be expected to work clinically across all sites and will be an expert in promoting choice across all aspects of the pregnancy, birth and postnatal care continuum.
The post holder will provide multidisciplinary clinical staff with the support to effectively promote choice for pregnancy, birth and postnatal care in all clinical settings, and will ensure there is an appropriate learning environment and evaluation of care.
The post holder will undertake these functions under the line management of the Head of Midwifery, working in conjunction with the Clinical Lead for Obstetrics and the Clinical Director.
The post holder will drive forward the better births agenda by supporting the implementation of all aspects of better births within any setting within UH Sussex Foundation Trust.
The post holder will provide act as first line management for the senior grade education team.
