Job summary

There is an opportunity for two substantive consultant appointments to be made within the Trauma & Orthopaedic Service, MSK Directorate, covering St Richard's Worthing and Southlands (SWS) Hospitals, to begin as soon as possible.

Both posts are for a consultant trauma surgeon with an orthopaedic sub-specialist interest in lower limb arthroplasty. The department would expect appropriate fellowship training or previous experience in the areas of major trauma, orthopaedic trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery.

The successful candidates will form part of a team of 21 consultants with special interests in trauma, lower limb, arthroplasty (hip & knee), revision arthroplasty, shoulder and elbow, soft tissue knee, foot and ankle, hand and wrist surgery. The successful candidates will be expected to embrace our team working philosophy and engage in our multidisciplinary approach.

The department has access to Theatre and Clinic facilities at St. Richard's, Worthing, and Southlands Hospitals. All the elective arthroplasty operating is done at St Richard's Hospital. Elective Clinic and day case operating capacity is additionally provided at Southlands Hospital. At St. Richard's hospital there are four dedicated Trauma & Orthopaedics Theatres, in Worthing Hospital there are two dedicated Trauma & Orthopaedics Theatres and Day Surgery Unit at Southlands Hospital and St. Richard's Hospital. Fracture and Elective Clinic areas are located at Worthing, St Richard's, and Southlands Hospitals.

Main duties of the job

These posts will be expected to provide a Lower Limb Trauma cross site and Primary Hip & Knee Arthroplasty service delivered through outpatient clinics cross site but operating mainly based at St. Richard's hospital.

On-call responsibility will be a 1 in 8 (under re-configuration) Consultant of the Week on-call rota and the expectation is that General trauma will be delivered from both sites. Post holder will be expected to do night on calls as well. The present on call trauma is expected to be delivered from both St. Richard's and Worthing Hospitals.

St Richard's hospital and Worthing general hospital provide inpatient and acute services while Southlands Hospital provides Day Case service. We provide a busy Trauma service treating nearly 900 Fractured Neck of Femur patients each year in addition to general trauma, sub-specialist Trauma and an Elective Orthopaedic service.

In 2022/23, the department provided 3, 574 non-elective spells and 3,584 elective inpatient and day case spells, with over 10,000 emergency referrals and more than 6,000 elective referrals (including requests for advice and guidance) supported by over 36,000 clinic appointments.
