Job summary
The post holder's prime responsibility will be to support the provision of orthodontic and associated dental technology services for the Orthodontic department and other contracted agencies across the Trust sites as directed by the Chief Technician.
To work within the orthodontic laboratory providing support for the orthodontic technicians, consultants, specialist registrars and their associated teams of clinical assistants; oral surgery consultants and their associated teams, and supporting nursing staff.

Job responsibilities
- Communication and relationship skills
The post holder will be required to receive complex and sensitive information in the form of laboratory prescriptions completed by clinical members of staff.
- Knowledge, training and experience
The post holder must hold a recognised Dental Technology qualification and be registered with the GDC as a dental technician. The must be able to construct a wide range of orthodontic appliances, including fixed, functional and removable appliances and have experience of doing so within a laboratory setting.
- Analytical and judgemental skills
The post holder will be required to analyse the prescriptions provided prior to the construction of the required appliance. They should use their own judgement as to the best materials and techniques to use to complete the work to a high standard, working within the material and construction guidelines, and their own competency, at all times. Advice should be sort from the Chief Technician and/or prescribing clinician if clarification is needed.
- Planning and organisational skills
The post holder will be responsible for organising and planning their own workload in order to complete it on schedule to the standard required.
- Physical skills
The post holder will require a high degree of manual dexterity and hand/eye co-ordination. There will also be an element of keyboard use for inputting data. The use of hand tools and rotary instruments will be required on a daily basis
- Responsibilities for patient client care
The post holder will be responsible for providing vital technical support that will directly impact patient care if not carried out on time/to the standard required, including keeping accurate records of the appliances/models constructed which may be used for future reference in the patients treatment.
- Responsibilities for policy and service development implementation
The post holder will be required to implement both local and Trust wide policies in their area of work.
- Responsibilities for financial and physical resources
The post holder will be required to monitor stock levels and order materials as needed. They should alert the Service Lead of any potential issues as they arise. They will also take part in the cleaning and servicing of equipment as directed by the Service Lead.
- Responsibilities for information resources
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring work is correctly added to the Laboratory software and each stage of production is recorded. The post holder will also be responsible for ensuring that this information and that recorded on the patient prescriptions is handled according to Trust Information Governance policy.
- Responsibilities for research and development
The post holder will be required to take part in regular Departmental audits, both laboratory and clinic based, including recording and analysing data as directed by the Service Lead. They may also be required to test and evaluate new materials and equipment and report their findings to the Service Lead.
- Freedom to act
The post holder will complete their work in accordance with Laboratory and Trust wide policies.
