Job summary

A rare opportunity has arisen within the Renal Unit for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, reliable junior technician with good communication skills to join our friendly team. This is a Full-time post for 37.5 hours per week.

Applications are invited from persons with 5 GCSE's grade A-C (4-9) including maths and a science but desirably A-level qualifications in suitable science/engineering subjects or ONC / HNC in engineering who would like to pursue a career in Renal Technology.

The work would involve the installation and maintenance of dialysis and water treatment equipment at 3 main sites and in patients' homes.

The applicant would need to be physically fit as lifting, kneeling and bending is often required. The applicant must have a full UK driving licence.

The successful applicant will be given in-house training but would be expected to attend manufacturers courses and further/higher education as required until suitable competence is gained, to then move to a more senior role and participate in a 24/7 on-call service.

It is highly recommended for applicants to arrange a "walk around" the unit.

Main duties of the job

To develop, under supervision of senior colleagues, the skills necessary to be able to repair, maintain and service all dialysis equipment used within the renal department in order to progress towards a full technician role.

The Renal Technical department of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust currently maintains 126 Haemodialysis machines and associated equipment, including 5 central RO plants, across 3 main sites in Sussex. Currently 86 at RSCH (main unit), 22 at Bexhill and 18 at Worthing satellite units. The unit also maintains a fleet of home patient machines (currently 36) at homes throughout Sussex.

  • To ensure that accurate records and reports are maintained for all equipment and recorded on the workshop database.
  • To assist with the ordering and maintenance of the spare parts stock levels for all sites.
  • To assist with the transportation and the installation / removal of dialysis equipment to / from dialysis sites across the region acknowledging health and safety policies.
  • To take water quality samples from all dialysis sites and either deliver to accredited laboratories or analyse on-site or in-house endotoxin analyser to ensure that water quality is maintained to national haemodialysis standards (Renal Association guidelines). To record the results and to take appropriate action, under supervision, if required.
  • To assist the technical services manager in the smooth running of the department, to ensure the provision of an effective service and to help identify efficiency improvements.
  • To carry out under supervision, repairs, calibrations, servicing, modifications and planned preventative maintenance on a full range of highly complex haemodialysis and water treatment equipment to the manufacturers recommendations, guidelines and renal unit specifications.
  • To identify under supervision any problems with the performance of the intricate medical equipment and to rectify appropriately using specialist tools and test equipment (including IT software) in both workshop and clinical environments.
